Puerto Plata’s Meeting Place Resource Center is closing its lending library as readers switch to digital books and concentrating on other activities and offering without charge its books to readers at a Free Book Fair March 2-4

Many of its non-fiction books have been donated to the local USAD university, but there remain hundreds and hundreds of books, especially fiction, in alphabetical order by author. Rather than simply discarding these books -- many really great books -- or letting them disintegrate or go unused, the Meeting Place is inviting readers to a Free Book Fair this week, from 10 to 3 on Thursday and Friday and on Saturday 12 to 4 (March 2,3 and 4). FREE BOOK FAIR MARCH 2-4

Many have attended events at the Meeting Place since its establishment in 2008. In addition to discussions and exhibits, it housed the largest English lending library in the Dominican Republic. Over time, reading habits have shifted from print to digital, speeded up by the pandemic. Reluctantly, the Meeting Place is closing its library. It still remains open as a resource center for leadership, environment, and services to the visually disabled.

The Meeting Place Meets Again – Join us! Tuesday Jan 25 at 11 am!

In response to requests from the ex-pat/snowbird community, the Meeting Place is setting up a coffee-and-talk group to discuss subjects and concerns of interest. The first is on Tuesday January 25th at 11 am, with the topic (animated by Frances Boylston & Henry Milner) Abinader’s War on Corruption: will it defeat him or will he defeat it? The timing/ content of future meetings will depend upon the wishes and input of participants.

Don’t forget that the Meeting Place Library has more than 2000 books in its free-lending library. As we enter 2022 we invite readers to use our free-lending library and to tour the historic photo exhibition.

This month we are open 10 to 12:30 on Monday Jan 17 and Tuesday Jan 25. Regular and more frequent hours will be announced later. Contact us at [email protected] for more information.

Established in 2008 as a volunteer-run resource center, The Meeting Place has over the years responded to the different needs of the community – from in-service programs for English teachers, to Spanish classes, to orientations for travelers and student groups, to diplomatic and art receptions to a rich discussion/film series and especially providing the largest English language library in the north coast. The pandemic and the diminishing ex-pat community has meant the programs have for the last two years been in hiatus though it has made the center available to several Dominican service groups (youth, services for visually disabled, etc). We continue to serve as an English language and free-lending library and welcome residents, occasional and seasonal tourists, local students, volunteer groups, etc.
