Today, we mourn the heavy loss of a true legend, Artist Elfnesh Keno.
She was far more than a gifted musician; she was a voice for the voiceless, a fearless human rights activist, and a loving mother to the struggle for equality, justice, and democracy for the Oromo people and all of Ethiopia. Her songs inspired generations, and her unwavering dedication to freedom will forever be remembered.
May her soul rest in eternal peace. My deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and everyone grieving this profound loss across the country and beyond Her legacy will live on forever!

Artificial intelligence is reshaping our world at lightning speed. For the IGAD region, the real question is not only how quickly we adopt AI, but how we can deploy it for survival engineering—helping us confront drought, plan our economies, and strengthen health and food systems.
Today, I opened the Regional AI Framework and Strategy Stakeholder Consultation Workshop, bringing together experts from IGAD Member States, regional stakeholders and partners to shape a common regional direction.
Our collective action must protect digital sovereignty, use data responsibly and ensure AI reflects our languages, realities and priorities.

Held a productive meeting with Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, to advance regional cooperation on health systems, shared priorities and emergency preparedness. I commended Ethiopia’s leadership in strengthening regional health cooperation and congratulated Dr. Mekdes on her appointment as Chair of the WHO Regional Committee.
I reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to stronger health systems and a more coordinated regional response to future public health emergencies.

Met with the African Union Commission Chairperson, H.E.Mohamed Yesuf this afternoon at the AUC Headquarters in Addis Ababa.
Our discussions focused on areas of mutual interest, including the regional peace and security situation. I also briefed the Chairperson on my recent mission to Sudan, where we agreed to strengthen IGAD–AU joint efforts towards advancing peace and stability in Sudan, for the benefit of the Sudanese people.

Honoured to join High Ethiopian government officials,health ministers, policymakers, healthcare leaders, investors and innovators at the 13th East Africa Healthcare Federation Conference and International Exhibition in Addis Ababa.
Today’s gathering reinforces a simple truth; health sovereignty underpins national sovereignty, economic resilience and shared prosperity. East Africa has the talent, innovation and ambition to build resilient health systems, create jobs, attract investment and strengthen local manufacturing.
It’s time to move from dependency to capacity, from aid to investment, and from importing solutions to building African solutions. From Adwa to this generation, Africa has shown it can determine its own destiny. Now, we must prove we can also secure our health.

The future of our region is inseparable from the future of Sudan.
Today in Khartoum, I met with H.E. Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan. Our discussions focused on the current situation in Sudan and the collective responsibility to advance a lasting, Sudanese-led peace.
As a strategic bridge between Africa and the Middle East, peace in Sudan is vital not only for regional stability but, above all, for the millions of Sudanese who continue to bear the greatest burden of this conflict.

IGAD will continue to support the people of Sudan in their pursuit of peace, stability, and recovery.

This morning, I arrived in Khartoum to engage with the leadership of the Republic of Sudan and assess the situation on the ground.
During my visit, I will hold high-level discussions on the path to lasting peace. The future of Sudan belongs to the Sudanese people, and IGAD remains committed to supporting their efforts towards dialogue, peace, and recovery.

Earlier today in Nairobi, Kenya, I held a productive meeting with the media leaders from Kenya and the region, including , CEO of the Media Council of Kenya and the President of the East Africa Press Councils; the Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Journalists and President of the Federation of East Africa Journalists ; and the President of the Kenya Editors’ Guild, Ms.

We discussed the media sector’s vital role in advancing regional integration, peace and security, and journalist safety and wellbeing, while exploring collaboration ahead of the IGAD Media Awards 2026 later this year.
