Your resume is the first impression an employer has of you and your skills when they are looking to hire a future employee. Below are some tips on what to include on your resume.

It's important to make sure that your resume stands out. Many resumes are now read by machines, while other resumes reach a real person (but may only be skimmed for a few seconds).

Take advantage of:

#1 – Using keywords.

Research the industry you are looking to find a career in and make sure your resume reflects the skills needed. Adding various keywords in your resume that pertain to you and the industry will help your resume become more relevant to the position. However, be careful not to "keyword stuff" your resume, but be true and honest when listing your work history.

#2 – Using white space.

Many resumes are skimmed by future employers, so it's important to make it easy to read. Big blocks of text may be difficult to read. Use white space wisely and design a resume that is visually appealing.

#3 – Keeping it simple.

To make your resume easy to read and concise, keep it simple. Highlight only the most important responsibilities and tasks from your previous positions. It's always good to highlight a few percentages or statistics from successes you've had on various projects.

If you need help creating a resume, ask your local Soldier for Life - Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP) counselor for assistance. SFL-TAP also offers various resume courses through the Department of Labor and the SFL-TAP Virtual Center.

Did you know that AHE, Accessing Higher Education, is a free two-day workshop and is available to transitioning Soldiers during the Soldier for Life - Transition Assistance Program? Learn facts about the photo in this infographic!

The number one priority of transitioning Soldiers is finding a career, followed by attending school, based on fiscal year 2017 Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP) exit questionnaires.

The exit questionnaires also showed a considerable increase in Soldiers responding that education became a priority during SFL-TAP instruction. This may indicate that the transition process may open up Soldiers to the idea of increasing education and skill sets in new industries or specialties in order to achieve post-transition career goals.

Some transitioning Soldiers decide that they would like to pursue a new career separate from their military training in the civilian sector. This may require them to attend college or receive specialized education that can help them meet their personal goals.

This was true for retired Lieutenant Colonel Janet Herrick, who had a master's degree upon transition, but decided to pursue a new career field - healthcare. After retirement from 20 years of active duty Army service, Herrick, who attended Accessing Higher Education (AHE), a workshop offered during SFL-TAP, enrolled in a local college close to her family.

"I knew I wanted to go into a line of work that was different than what I did in the Army. The workshop shared many resources and comparison tools for finding a school that matched my future career path," Herrick said.

Other transitioning Soldiers in the same position can find assistance during SFL-TAP by attending the AHE workshop. The two-day, no-cost workshop assists transitioning Soldiers with finding the right college or educational opportunities, as well as how to apply to the school and meet with school representatives.

According to the Pew Research Center, The State of American Jobs, those with a 4-year college degree or higher-level education were the only group to experience a gain in median earnings since 1980, from $57,764 to $64,000. Transitioning Soldiers may be interested in breaking into competitive fields and industries where additional education can help the Soldier have a leg-up against other applicants. Education may also be a way for Soldiers to increase future income and promotion opportunities.

Transitioning Soldiers interested in learning more about their educational options and deciding if gaining additional schooling will assist them in finding their dream careers should contact a local SFL-TAP center and speak with a transition counselor to sign up for the next AHE workshop.

This week, we are highlighting the Accessing Higher Education (AHE) program during the Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP).

This is a free, optional two-day workshop you can take during SFL-TAP as a transitioning Soldier to help you learn more about scholarship, GI Bill benefits, student loans and more to apply to college or school post-transition. Check out this success story from an Army Veteran!

Qi was a logistical supply specialist in the Army and served for four years. Qi attended the Accessing Higher Education class at Fort Carson Soldier for Life - Transition Assistance Program in winter 2017 during transition. A year later, Qi spoke with the SFL-TAP staff as a graduate student majoring in Economics.

Qi learned information about the GI Bill, FAFSA applications, the Yellow Ribbon Program, and general school research skills during the Accessing Higher Education workshop. During the class, the instructor guided students through several university websites as examples on how to complete the college application process, which allowed Qi to understand the paperwork required and get familiar with the various elements of applying to school.

“I was taught thoroughly how to do a complete school application,” Qi said. “[The] Higher Education class helped me finding the most suitable program [for me], which was [the] Yellow Ribbon Program.”

Qi said that the AHE course allowed students to see the multiple websites required to submit paperwork for school.

“[The instructor] showed us step-by-step [examples] on application [submissions] to FAFSA, JST, and student aid, which saved lots of time after I came to my university,” Qi said. “My…Higher Education class guaranteed me sufficient funds so I could focus on my graduate study after ETS.”
