🎓 From June 1 to 8, 2026, the 's 14th Summer Academy took place in Tutzing and Augsburg, giving participants and faculty members an opportunity to engage with the topic "North American Narratives of Crisis and Repair, Past and Present." The international summer school brought together 15 (post-)doctoral researchers working in 🇨🇦 Canada, 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇷🇴 Romania, 🇪🇸 Spain, and 🇺🇸 the United States and 10 faculty members, also from both sides of the Atlantic.

💡 We look back on an incredibly rich and rewarding academic and cultural program. The program's keynote lectures, the participants' project presentations, and our discussions allowed for a nuanced examination of various dimensions of North American crisis and repair narratives. Beyond the academic program, the event included a hike to Andechs Monestary, a visit to Buchheim Museum in Bernried, and two city tours in Augsburg that gave our participants an opportunity to learn about the Fuggerei – the world’s oldest existing social housing complex – as well as the city's long history of water management. Over the course of the three days, scholars from Europe and North America working in various academic disciplines, will come together to discuss topics surrounding freedom of speech and the First Amendment. The two keynote speakers are the Danish lawyer and human-rights advocate Jacob Mchangama (Vanderbilt University & The Future of Free Speech) and the American historian and Pulitzer Prize winner David Blight (Yale University).

In the conference's opening discussion, moderated by Gerlinde Groitl (Universität Regensburg), Mirjam Zadoff (Director, Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism), Vanessa Vollmann (Universität Passau), Reymer Klüver (Süddeutsche Zeitung), and Steven D. Solomon (New York University) will discuss free speech as a lived and contested practice. 🎬 The second day will feature a screening and discussion of The Librarians Film, a documentary about librarians' resistance to book bans Texas, Florida, and beyond.

Im Rahmen unserer Veranstaltungsreihe "Voices of Democracy", die die gemeinsam mit dem NS-Dokumentationszentrum München ausrichtet, durften wir gestern Prof. Dr. Dagmar Herzog (The Graduate Center, CUNY) in München begrüßen.

Die Historikerin sprach mit der Soziologin Prof. Dr. Paula-Irene Villa Braslavsky (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) über historische Verbindungen zwischen Rassismus, Ableismus und sexualisierten Gewaltbildern. Ausgehend von Herzogs Buch "Der neue faschistische Körper" sprachen die beiden Forscherinnen im bis zum letzten Platz gefüllten Saal des NS-Dokuzentrums unter anderem darüber, wie beunruhigend präsent diese Phänomene auch heute wieder sind.

Wir danken Dagmar Herzog und Paula-Irene Villa-Braslavsky sehr herzlich für diesen spannenden und erkenntnisreichen Abend, unseren Partnern vom NS-Dokumentationszentrum für die exzellente Organisation und den Museum Signers (Gehörlosenverband München und Umland e.V. - GMU) für die Übersetzung des Gesprächs in Deutsche Gebärdensprache.

Am Mittwoch, 20. Mai 2026, um 18:15 Uhr laden wir Sie sehr herzlich zu einem Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Magdalena Nieslony (Universität Innsbruck) ins Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte München ein. Prof. Nieslony wird über amerikanische Künster*innen der 1960er und 1970er-Jahre sprechen, die in Rauminstallationen und land art-Projekten körperliche Präsenz nutzen, um mit ihren Werken Kritik am täuschenden Kamerablick zu üben.

Last night, the (BAA), the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte München (ZI), and LMU Munich's Amerika-Institut hosted an intriguing event with Aperture's Executive Director Sarah Meister at Amerikahaus München.

The art historian, who previously served as MoMA The Museum of Modern Art's photography curator for more than 25 years, reflected on the ninety-year history of Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother," an iconic photo the U.S. photographer took in Nipomo, CA, in March 1936 during her time with the Resettlement Administration. The image soon became one of the world's most widely distributed photo, yet Lange struggled with its popularity.

After her intriguing talk, Sarah Meister engaged in a discussion with BAA-Director Kerstin Schmidt (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München), Franziska Lampe (Photothek, ZI), and Sonja Palade (Ann & Jürgen Wilde Foundation). Dominik Brabant, Deputy Director of Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte München, moderated the discussion.

Vortragsreihe: Das Auge der Kamera: Kunst, Politik und Wahrnehmung in der amerikanischen Fotografie

Dorothea Langes 1936 entstandenes Porträt Migrant Mother gilt als eine der ikonischsten Fotografien der Zeit der Großen Depression in den USA. Das Bild verdichtet die Situation von Migrantinnen sowohl in der Darstellung ihrer prekären Lebensumstände als auch im Ausdruck ihrer Entschlossenheit und Widerstandskraft. Anlässlich des bevorstehenden 90. Jahrestags dieser berühmten Fotografie nimmt die Vortragsreihe diesen Moment zum Ausgangspunkt, um aus internationaler Perspektive die „practices of looking“ (Sturken/Cartwright) in der amerikanischen Fotokunst zu untersuchen.
