Lord Krishna: A timeless story, an enduring cultural journey
As we recently celebrated the birth of Lord Krishna on Janmashtami, we take a moment to revisit the special exhibition “Krishna. Religion, Art and Pop Culture” at the Museum Fünf Kontinente, Munich.
Running from 24 April to 8 November 2026, the exhibition explores the many dimensions of Lord Krishna — from religious traditions and ritual practices to classical art and contemporary popular culture. Bringing together more than 100 objects from the Museum’s collections, it presents the diverse ways in which Lord Krishna has been represented, worshipped and understood across different regions, periods and cultural contexts.
In this video, Dr. Uta Werlich, Director of the Museum Fünf Kontinente, and Dr. Anne Hartig Curator and co-curator of the exhibition, share their perspectives on the exhibition — the inspiration and motivations behind it, the curatorial journey, and what they hope visitors take away from this exploration of Lord Krishna.
For millions across the world, Lord Krishna is a deeply cherished and living presence — celebrated through music, dance, painting, sculpture, literature, festivals and countless traditions. He is revered as the divine hero, the compassionate guide and the wise teacher whose message of dharma, duty, wisdom and devotion continues to resonate across generations.
The exhibition offers a particularly meaningful opportunity to encounter these multiple dimensions of Lord Krishna in Munich. By bringing together objects from different periods, regions and contexts, it invites visitors to reflect on both the continuities and the changing expressions of Krishna in religious and cultural life.
