Many visitors only notice it at second glance: the sundial on the Hall of Glass. ☀️🕰️
Dating back to around 1540, it tells the time without any technology – using only sunlight and a metal gnomon casting a shadow.

Especially fascinating are the signs of the zodiac surrounding the dial. ✨♈♌♎
Over the course of the year, the tip of the shadow moves between the lines of the individual zodiac signs. This means the sundial indicates not only the time of day, but also the season.

So next time you’re exploring the castle courtyard, make sure to look up 👀
Did you notice the sundial during your last visit?

Walking through Heidelberg Castle, you quickly realize there’s a different view waiting around almost every corner ☀️🏰

One moment you’re standing on the Scheffel Terrace overlooking the Old Town, the Neckar and the Old Bridge.
A few steps later, the Altan opens up to wide views across Heidelberg and the Neckar Valley.
And then the Stückgarten suddenly feels a bit quieter 🌿

Between the Broken Tower, old walls and the Elisabeth Gate, it’s easy to stop for a moment — not just because you can see all the way to the Rhine plain.

Especially in spring, these are the small moments that keep people coming back to the castle.

Where’s your favorite place at the castle to pause and take in the view? 😊

This Easter, step into history at Heidelberg Castle! 🏰🐣

Did you know that the castle’s chapel was built between 1602 and 1607 by the Protestant Elector Friedrich IV? Its true highlight, however, came later: an impressive Baroque altar over eight meters tall, created in the 18th century by Antwerp artist Anthoni Schoonjans. 🎨🖌

A visit to Heidelberg Castle at Easter offers not only breathtaking views, but also a journey through art, faith, and centuries of history. 🌷🌞

A gift carved in stone 💛

According to legend, the magnificent Elizabeth Gate at Heidelberg Castle was a birthday present from Prince-Elector Friedrich V to his wife Elizabeth Stuart in 1615. 🎁

More than just a splendid portal, it is said to be a built declaration of his sincere love. 💕

To this day, it stands as a reminder of the harmonious marriage of the princely couple and their shared time in Heidelberg. 🏰

Two angels above the entrance. 👼 The Christmas season invites a closer look, especially at details like this. ✨❄🏰

Above the entrance portal of the Ruprecht Building, two angels are carved into the stone.

According to the legend, the relief is connected to the builder’s twin children, who are said to have fallen from the scaffolding. Their father reportedly placed a rosary on their grave every day. One night, he dreamed that the children appeared to him and told him they were safe in heaven. 👼

The next morning, he is said to have found a wreath in his home. In response, he created this relief, showing the twins as angels carrying a rosary. 🌹

Details like this are easy to miss — especially when passing by quickly.

at Heidelberg Castle 🍂🌂🌨
November might feel a little grey – but a little escape to Heidelberg Castle is always worth it. The quiet courtyards, the views over the old town, and the crisp air make a visit in late autumn surprisingly magical.

Wrap up warm, take a slow walk through the ruins or step inside the historic interiors of the castle, and enjoy Heidelberg from above – even on cooler days.
