We’re live at SETAC 2026 in Maastricht! 🎉

Yesterday we set up our booth and joined the opening reception — already a great start with first catch-ups with friends and partners. The best conferences really do begin before they officially open! 😊

From today until Thursday, you’ll find us at booth #92 at MECC Maastricht. We’re here to talk microplastics analysis, share our latest filtration units and filter technologies, and — most importantly — connect with the people doing the important work in this field.

Something we've been working on for a while is finally taking shape. 🙌

Microplastics and nanoplastics are everywhere — in our water, our air, our food. And while the research community is making great progress, one thing remains clear: we still have more questions than answers.

That's exactly why we're organizing a workshop dedicated to just that.

🔬 Microplastics in urban fountains – an underestimated problem.

A new study, published together with Częstochowa University of Technology, reveals: microplastics are found everywhere in urban fountains – from Gliwice and Rybnik to Halle (Saale), Germany.

The findings are interesting:
→ Up to 110 particles per liter measured in Polish cities
→ Significantly lower levels in Halle – local conditions make the difference
→ Fibers, fragments, pellets, and foils – every fountain tells its own story

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
Urban fountains are publicly accessible, directly exposed – and largely unstudied. They reflect what is happening in our urban environment.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿:
Precise analysis starts with the right filter. Our silicon membranes enable reliable detection of microplastic particles – including sub-micron ranges – and form the foundation for trustworthy research results like these.

🌏 Back from Seoul — and still reflecting on a fantastic week!

Last week we had the chance to visit LabSpinner and meet the team behind the ExoDiscovery® system — a beautifully engineered platform for fast, gentle isolation of extracellular vesicles (EVs) at the nanoscale.

For us, this visit had a very personal dimension: SmartMembrane’s silicon filters are built right into the ExoDisc® — the core component of the system. Sitting across the table from the people who work with our technology every day, and talking about how we can make it even better together — that’s the kind of conversation that reminds you why you do this work. 🔬

We’ve agreed to build on this foundation with a long-term cooperation, focused on jointly optimizing our filter solutions for the ExoDisc® platform. Lots to look forward to.

A big thank you to David Lee and the LabSpinner team for the incredibly warm welcome and the open, inspiring exchange. We left Seoul energized — and already looking forward to the next steps! 🤝

We had the privilege of visiting our valued partner KIAST Korea this week—and what a meeting it was. 🤝

As global momentum in microplastics and nanoplastics research continues to accelerate, close partnerships like ours with KIAST Korea are more important than ever. Together, we are pushing the boundaries of what’s analytically possible.

During our visit, we introduced new products and solutions tailored for microplastics and nanoplastics applications—innovations we are excited to bring to the Korean market together with KIAST Korea. 🇰🇷

We are proud to support researchers worldwide who are dedicating their work to understanding micro- and nanoplastics in human health, food safety, and environmental science.

This visit reinforced what we already knew: great science thrives on great partnerships. 💡

👨‍🔬 We are delighted to announce that Hardik Vaghasiya has joined SmartMembranes GmbH as our new Head of Silicon Special Products.

Hardik brings extensive international experience and a strong scientific and engineering background in laser physics, advanced materials processing, and precision instrumentation. After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in India, he moved to Germany to further specialize in high-tech systems, earning a Master’s degree in Scientific Instrumentation from Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena, followed by a PhD in Laser Physics at Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg. 📖 🌏

💡 During his research career, Hardik developed deep expertise in ultrashort laser–matter interaction, spectroscopy, micro-nano fabrication, and advanced optical systems. His interdisciplinary approach, combining scientific research with industrial application, makes him ideally suited to lead our silicon-based product innovations.

We are very pleased to welcome Hardik to our team and look forward to the new projects, developments, and innovations we will achieve together.

After a restful holiday season, our team is back together, motivated and full of ideas.
Across development, production, and application engineering, we are already working hands-on on new products — expanding our portfolio and turning them into complete, application-ready solutions.
