🍂 Winter is coming – and animals are getting ready! ❄️
As temperatures drop and days get shorter, wildlife in Bavaria starts preparing for the cold season in different ways:
🐿️ Squirrels gather acorns, nuts, and seeds to store in hidden spots.
🦔 Hedgehogs build cozy nests under piles of leaves and branches to hibernate.
🦌 Deer grow thicker winter coats and move less to save energy.
🦆 Birds either migrate south or fluff up their feathers for insulation.

You can help local wildlife, too!
🌰 Leave some leaves and brush piles in your garden – perfect winter shelter for hedgehogs, insects, and frogs.
🐦 Set up a bird feeder and clean water bowl (refill regularly when it freezes).
🚫 Avoid cutting back everything in fall – seed heads and dry stems provide food and habitat.

🇺🇸🤝 Community Event Recap: “Hohenfels Training Area – Cultural-Historical Aspects from 1938 through the Early 1950s” with Dr. Albert Böhm

About 150 guests from Hohenfels, Schmidmuehlen, and nearby towns joined us in the Keltensaal to explore the fascinating history of the Hohenfels Training Area - from its Wehrmacht years up to the U.S. occupation in 1951.
Mayor Graf opened and closed the event with warm remarks and announced an exciting 2026 exhibition to celebrate 75 years of the Hohenfels Training Area.
The audience showed also great interest in Dr. Böhm’s presentation and the historical photos of the training area.

📣 Understanding our shared history helps strengthen community relations and support the ongoing U.S. mission: HTA today stands as a model for community cooperation, environmental care, and military readiness.
USAG Bavaria – Hohenfels: Strengthening community ties and deepening mutual understanding through shared history.

Species Spotlight: Owls
This spooky season, let’s shine a light on one of nature’s most mysterious night creatures: Owls! Known for their haunting calls and silent flight, owls have inspired myths and Halloween legends for centuries. But beyond the spooky stories, owls play a vital role in keeping ecosystems healthy.
Fun Facts:
• Owls can turn their heads up to 270 degrees – almost all the way around!
• Their wings are specially adapted for silent flight, perfect for hunting at night.
• Owls help control rodent populations, making them important nature’s pest control.
As the nights get longer this autumn, keep an ear out for the “hoo-hoo” of owls around Grafenwöhr’s forests.
This Halloween, remember: owls may sound spooky, but they’re hardworking guardians of the night!

🍐 Birnenschönheiten – and the winner is… USAG Bavaria! 🍐
Last week, on August 31, the Environmental Division of USAG Bavaria proudly took part in the regional competition “Birnenschönheiten – Spuren und Strukturen unserer Landschaft” hosted by the Government of the Upper Palatinate – and we won! 🏆
The winning pear tree stands in the former village of Beilenstein on the Grafenwöhr Training Area. At over 90 years old with a trunk circumference of 2.51 m, it impressed the jury with its size, harmonious shape, and resilience. This tree tells its story through a hollow trunk and fresh new shoots and blossoms – a true symbol of longevity and vitality.
The winning photos will be featured in the 2026 Pear Calendar. The award was presented at the Landesgartenschau in Furth im Wald to Elene Ingenbrand (Environmental Outreach), Stefan Härtl (Nature Conservation & Monument Preservation), and Environmental Division Director Christian Henle.
For more than 20 years, our Environmental Division has been preserving old orchards and traditional fruit varieties on the training area – even creating a dedicated orchard in 2002 to safeguard historic apples and pears for future generations.
More fruit stories are coming soon! Keep an eye out for our Apple Orchard event invitation – and join us in celebrating another delicious part of Bavarian nature.

Co-hosted by the 7th ATC and the Environmental Division, our July Historical Walking Tour of Tower Barracks was a huge success! Many soldiers, civilians, and family members attended and enjoyed the perfect weather while exploring key sites of German-American history.
One of the highlights was the unique opportunity to enter the famous water tower, which not many people get to do!
Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped make this event so special.
Missed it? Don’t worry – we’re planning a second tour in October.

⚠️ GIANT HOGWEED – Looks impressive but handle with care!
You might spot this towering plant with large white flower clusters and thick, purple-speckled stems growing around open fields, roadsides, or streams. That’s Giant Hogweed - and while it may look beautiful, it’s not harmless.
🧪 What’s the risk?
Giant hogweed contains a toxic sap that, when combined with sunlight, can cause skin burns and blisters. It can even lead to long-term skin sensitivity.
🔍 How to recognize it:
• Can grow over 10 ft tall
• White umbrella-shaped flower heads (up to 50 cm across)
• Thick stem with purple spots and stiff white hairs
🚫 DO NOT touch, cut, or remove the plant yourself.
If you find a plant that looks like it, report it to the Environmental Division – we’ll take it from there.
🎯 Why it matters:
Besides being dangerous to humans, hogweed is invasive – it spreads aggressively and pushes out native species.
Let’s work together to keep our environment safe for everyone – humans and nature alike.
