For more than 40 years, NATO countries and units have been able to rely on the support of NATO's Airborne Early Warning and Control Force (NAEW&CF). The NAEW&CF operates a fleet of 14 Boeing E-3A Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS) aircraft equipped with long-range radar and passive sensors capable of detecting air and surface contacts over large distances. It conducts a wide range of missio

ns from peacetime air policing, support to counter-terrorism, evacuation operations, embargo, initial entry and crisis response to the full spectrum of wartime missions. NAEW&C holds a unique place in NATO military history because it is the first multinational flying unit established by the Alliance and 18 NATO member nations participate in the programme. Its mission is to perform all surveillance and battle management tasks ordered by the NAEW&C Force Commander on behalf of Supreme Allied Commander Europe, NATOs highest military leadership in Europe. The NAEW&CF has two units with operational capability: The NATO E-3A Component in Geilenkirchen, Germany, with 14 E-3A aircraft and the E-3D Component of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in Waddington, UK. The six E-3D aircraft will be crewed solely by RAF personnel un 2021. From 2023 the UK will contribute with three E-7 Aircrafts.

20 NATO member nations participate in the NAEW&CF programme: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuanian, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Seventeen of these nations provide military personnel to the Force (Luxembourg does not provide military personnel).

Today in NAEW&CF History [13 May, 1996] ✈️ 🌍

In support of the peacekeeping efforts in the former Yugoslavia, a NATO Trainer Cargo Aircraft touched down at Sarajevo airport with relief supplies. This Trainer Cargo Aircraft is the first aircraft bearing NATO insignia that has ever landed there.

Just a few years prior, NAEW E-3A and E-3D crews successfully supported Operation Deny Flight, providing enforcement of the United Nations’ imposed ‘No Fly Zone’ over the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The humanitarian aid supplies included five tons of baby food and 600 stuffed animals for children in need.

Shortly after, Sarajevo airport was able to reopen for civilian use and now serves as the international gateway to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

🇬🇧 Late opening hours at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen

On 11 and 12 May, the NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen will have late opening hours due to aircrew training at night including air refuelling training. Such training flights are necessary to guarantee our operational readiness and keep our training capability at the highest level.

The leadership of the E-3A Component is aware that flights outside the standard operating hours (Monday-Friday 08.00-22.00) have an effect on the vicinity and therefore will try to keep these flights to a minimum.

NATO military activities are carefully prepared. However, weather conditions or operational circumstances may cause flights to proceed differently than previously announced. Due to operational safety reasons, no further details can be published.

🇳🇱 NAVO vliegbasis Geilenkirchen langer open

United in effort 🦅

For more than thirty years, Squadron 3 served as one of NATO E-3A Component’s Operational Squadrons. Its mascot was an eagle and the members who called Squadron 3 “home” exemplified their motto “coniuncti in opere (sumus)”, or “United in Effort” as they felt a very special obligation to serve as an international community acting in concert for one common goal.

The original patch displayed a golden eagle under the NATO star, symbolizing strength, speed, and perseverance. The eagle’s wings spread as it ruled over the skies, protecting the integrity and freedom of NATO territories.

While the Squadron was officially decommissioned in 2015, it holds a special place in the hearts and minds of many former and current members of .

Have you heard of Flying Squadron 3?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder… but let’s be honest, the E-3A makes a pretty strong case ✈️👀

From that unmistakable radar dome to the mission-ready presence in the sky, this aircraft isn’t just about looks, it’s about purpose. Watching over Allied airspace 24/7.

Still… we wouldn’t blame you if you admired the view a little.

What’s your favorite thing about the E-3A? 👇
