🆕 The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has revealed a panorama of star formation in one of the largest Webb images released to the public so far.
🔴 This is the nearby star-forming region IC 348. In regions like this, cold clouds of molecular hydrogen gas collapse to form new stars 🌟 – from massive stars that burn out after only a few million years to the smallest stars weighing just 8% of the Sun’s mass.
🔴 Smaller still is a class of strange objects known as brown dwarfs. Brown dwarfs form like stars, but their cores never become hot enough to fuse hydrogen into helium. This image of IC 348 was snapped in the hunt for the smallest brown dwarfs 🔬🟤
🔴 Astronomers using Webb’s and found brown dwarfs with masses as low as just twice the mass of Jupiter – the smallest brown dwarfs yet discovered!
