The Aspen Idea

The Aspen Institute Germany promotes values-based leadership, constructive dialog amongst conflicting parties, and Euro-Atlantic cooperation to support and enhance a strong open society. Aspen Germany does this by convening decision-makers and experts from politics, business, academia, media, culture, and civil society in three programs:

- Policy Programs offer a non-partisan conf

idential platform for dialog and analysis to address regional and global challenges and develop mutually acceptable solutions.

- Leadership Programs reflect on values and ideas through the Socratic method to deepen knowledge, broaden perspectives, and enhance participants’ ability to solve the problems they face.
- Public Programs provide a forum for open and constructive dialog between decision-makers and a broader audience on a wide range of current issues. The Aspen Institute Germany was founded in Berlin in 1974. Until today it embodies the idea of transatlantic community and a free and open society. It serves as a non-partisan, non-profit convening platform and is part of the global Aspen network with partners in the U.S., France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania, Spain, Japan, India, and Mexico. Together, the Institutes are committed to address the challenges of the 21st century.

Applications are now open for our newly launched project . Generously supported by the Auswärtiges Amt, is a two-year project aimed at strengthening democratic resilience online at a time when disinformation on social media is spreading rapidly.

By bringing together content creators and influencers, we want to strengthen the democratic voices on social media. In our first project year, participants will take part in workshops and study trips to Berlin and Bucharest, where they will have the chance to exchange with experts and high-level stakeholders to deepen their understanding of the forces reshaping the digital information environment and the role they themselves can play in defending it.

Today, the delegation had the chance to visit the NC Center for Poultry Education which is managed by U.S.-German participant Crystal Nichols and part of the Perdue Farms network!

The NC Center for Poultry Education is located on an eight-house commercial broiler farm, which integrates advanced technologies, including digital monitoring systems, to optimize bird health, welfare, and efficiency. This enables the Center to act as a “living classroom,” enabling students, farmers, and other agricultural professionals to gain first-hand experience of modern poultry production methods. During the tour, the delegation learned about how the Center educates the public, shrinking the divide between consumers and farmers. What was particularly impressive on site was how accessible the production systems are to the public.

We kicked off the U.S.-German trip to Raleigh, North Carolina with a day full of engaging meetings with government officials and researchers.

In the morning, we met with key representatives of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. During the discussion, the group learned about the agricultural sector in North Carolina and the role of the NCDA&CS in supporting local producers and preventing animal diseases.

After completing the first policy recommendation workshop of the trip, the group headed to NC State NC State University NC State-Department of Animal Science NC State Prestage Department of Poultry Science for an afternoon packed with meetings with animal health and welfare researchers; tours of the NC State Animal and Poultry Waste Center and the Feed Mill Education Unit; and an ice cream break at the NC State Howling Cow Ice Cream with Dr. Rocio Crespo of the College of Veterinary Medicine NC State College of Veterinary Medicine & Veterinary Hospital

After a quick pit stop at the Boot Barn, the group enjoyed a dinner with special guest Dr. Michael Martin, the NC State Veterinarian.

Today, our participants met with key representatives of the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services including State Vet Dr. Mike Martin, Director of Poultry Programs Rebecca Mansell, and Directors of Domestic and International Marketing Sim McIver and Cathy Ma.

The group received a comprehensive overview of poultry and hog production and health management in North Carolina. In the United States, North Carolina is the 1st largest producer of poultry and 3rd largest producer of swine, and the NCDA&CS plays a key role in regulating animal health, market standards, and food quality. The discussion focused on disease prevention, monitoring, and management in the poultry value chain, including the challenges of designing programs for different producer scales and importance of good management practices.

RESET Study Trip – Day 3 in Norfolk, Virginia 🇺🇸

Our final full day in Virginia focused on innovation, cybersecurity, and the ways technology is reshaping security policy on both sides of the Atlantic.

At the 757 Defense Tech Accelerator, we learned more about how startups, investors, and government institutions work together to bring new technologies into the defense space. The discussions highlighted just how important innovation ecosystems have become for maintaining technological competitiveness and addressing emerging security challenges.

Later, at Old Dominion University's School of Cybersecurity, conversations focused on the evolving cyber threat landscape and the challenges that come with protecting critical infrastructure, democratic institutions, and election systems.

The afternoon took us onto the water for a tour of Norfolk Harbor, including a view of Naval Station Norfolk from sea. After spending several days discussing military readiness, logistics, and alliance cooperation, seeing the scale of the infrastructure that supports those efforts offered a useful perspective.

We closed the evening with a final dinner together and a chance to reflect on the conversations of the past few days before heading to Wiesbaden in September. From military readiness and defense innovation to cybersecurity and energy resilience, the week underscored the scale of the concept of security and how many of the challenges facing the United States and Europe are shared.

After a week of intensive exchanges in , Aspen Institute Germany concluded a successful visit by a delegation from the Kosovar Center for Security Studies - KCSS as part of the SECURE – Stability, European Cooperation & Unity for Regional Engagement project.

Throughout the week, representatives Dr. Ramadan Ilazi, Jeta Loshaj, and Tringa Naka engaged with stakeholders from government institutions, political foundations, and civil society organizations to discuss regional security developments, cybersecurity challenges, and opportunities for strengthening EU–Western Balkans cooperation.

A central argument put forward by KCSS throughout the week was that the EU accession process for the Western Balkans must also be about security integration. While economic convergence remains an important pillar of European integration, security convergence is, according to KCSS, equally essential for both the region and the EU.

By facilitating these exchanges, the SECURE project contributes to enhancing the participation of organizations from the in policy processes, strengthening regional expertise, and fostering long-term partnerships. The project is funded by the Auswärtiges Amt.
