Strengthening South Africa-Germany cooperation in the energy sector.

Today, the Embassy of South Africa in Berlin was pleased to host a delegation of senior women leaders from South Africa’s energy and infrastructure sectors as part of the C-Suite Women in Energy Programme.

The engagement provided a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives on South Africa’s Just Energy Transition, Germany’s energy transition and opportunities for deeper bilateral cooperation.

Discussions also highlighted the importance of women’s leadership in shaping the future of the energy sector and the value of connecting leaders, institutions and businesses across our two countries.

We thank GIZ, SAGEN-CET and the South African Department of Electricity and Energy for facilitating this important exchange and look forward to continued collaboration in support of a sustainable, inclusive and resilient energy future.

Tonight, South African singer-songwriter and alternative-pop/alternative-folk artist from Johannesburg, Lyra K, is on the line-up alongside TAM, Ora Blu and ISHA at FluxBau beside the River Spree, Pfuelstraße 5, 10997 Berlin, https://www.fluxfm.de/bergfest She will be opening the evening with two or three songs, giving the Berlin audience a short live introduction to the new album.

Doors open at 18:00, admission is free.
Visitors can make a voluntary artist donation at the entrance, which goes directly to the performers.

Siemens already has a substantial rail footprint in South Africa, having worked with PRASA since 2011 to modernise signalling and train-control systems across Gauteng. Its Gauteng Nerve Centre, a 3,400 m² facility, was built to centralise rail traffic management and monitor more than 600 trains serving up to 500,000 passengers a day.

BMW’s Rosslyn plant has an annual production capacity of around 75,000 vehicles.

On 15 September, George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess comes to Musikfest Berlin from 28 August to 23 September in a powerful semi-staged production presented by Chineke! Orchestra and the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Enrique Mazzola. Widely regarded as one of the most important stage works of the 20th century, the opera blends classical, jazz, and spiritual influences while telling the story of life, resilience, and community in Catfish Row.

Featuring an outstanding cast led by Siyabulela Ntlale and Nonhlanhla Yende, this special performance continues a long connection between Porgy and Bess and Berlin’s festival history, following notable presentations in 1952, 1976, and 2012.

Each spring, the arid landscapes of Namaqualand in South Africa transform into one of the world’s most spectacular natural displays, with millions of wildflowers carpeting the countryside in brilliant shades of orange, yellow, pink, and purple. The 2026 flower season peaks between mid-August and mid-September, depending on winter rainfall and weather conditions. Visitors are often amazed by the contrast between the normally dry terrain and the vibrant floral spectacle that appears almost overnight.

For the best experience, head to Namaqua National Park near Springbok, particularly the famous Skilpad section, which is renowned for its dense flower displays and scenic walking trails. Other outstanding locations include Nieuwoudtville, Biedouw Valley, Kamieskroon, and the West Coast flower regions further south.

South Africa and Leipzig at the Mädler Art Forum: 2/9/26 – 16/1/27:

On Wednesday, the MÄDLER ART FORUM opened “South Africa and Leipzig – Encounters in a Space for Experimentation”, an exhibition that marks the culmination of five years of creative exchange between South African and Leipzig-based artists: Katherine Bull, Sebastian Burger, Bongile Gorata Lecoge-Zulu, Roxy Kaczmarek, Thalente Khomo, Hemali Khoosal, Nolwazi Mbali Mahlangu, Bjørn Mehlhus, Nono Motlhoki, Maria Ondrej, Vlado Ondrej, Natalie Paneng, Ramona Schacht, Maria Schumacher, Jana Schulz, Oupa Sibeko, Tzung-Hui Lauren Lee, Raul Walch, Angelika Waniek, Xhanti Zwelendaba.

In her opening speech, Fransie Cooper, Political Counsellor at the South African Embassy in Berlin, said that „at a time when societies around the world face uncertainty, inequality, and growing division, these works remind us of a simple but powerful truth: Our shared humanity is greater than the challenges that separate us.
The embassy is deeply inspired by the many people in Germany who dedicate their time, energy, and resources to strengthening relations with South Africa and extents its heartfelt thanks and appreciation Head of Division cross-regional issues Africa, African Union, Southern Africa, Great Lakes Region, Federal Foreign Office, MenaLiebold, Director Mädler Art Forum, Anna-Louise Rolland, Curator South Africa and Leipzig, and to all the artists. South Africa’s trade and investment agenda is gaining momentum in Europe as dtic Deputy Minister John Steenhuisen is undertaking a working visit to Czechia, Poland and Germany from 31 August to 10 September 2026.

In Germany, his programme includes engagements with senior economic officials, major investors such as BMW and Siemens, industrial site visits, and discussions with business leaders in Munich and Frankfurt. He will also visit the South African National Pavilion at Automechanika, highlighting local companies and their products to an international audience.

Germany remains a key economic partner for South Africa and the country’s largest trading partner within the European Union. Bilateral trade grew by around 14%, from US$14.3 billion in 2024 to US$16.5 billion in 2025. The visit is therefore focused on deepening economic cooperation, attracting investment, expanding South African exports and advancing industrial development through initiatives such as the Global Eco Industrial Parks Partnership and Partnering in Business with Germany.
