Hurricane Melissa is now a powerful Category 5 storm heading towards Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. Because it's moving slowly, some areas will face more rainfall and floodwaters, which could devastate homes, communities, and livelihoods.

We're responding alongside several international Red Cross societies. Here's what's happening:

- We're supporting the U.S. Navy's efforts to relocate people from military installations in the storm's path and ensuring that those who had to leave quickly have essentials, like baby supplies.

- The Jamaica Red Cross has already mobilized volunteers and pre-positioned disaster supplies so help can reach people as soon as the storm passes.

- In Hispaniola and Cuba, local Red Cross teams are evacuating families to safer areas, providing mental health support, and working with local officials on their response.

This storm is striking regions already burdened by poverty and recent disasters. As the full impact of Hurricane Melissa unfolds, Red Cross teams will be there to bring relief to those who need it most.
