Members of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters were at the site of the Port Harcourt, Rivers State campus of the Nigerian Law School, Bayelsa, on oversight function today.

Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike assured that the project, which is solely funded by the Rivers State Government, would be delivered in 2022.

I toured the on Tuesday. I must say that I'm impressed with what I saw and I'm proud of for what she has achieved here.

It was equally a pleasure holding an informal dialogue on governance and electoral reform with some young and brilliant Nigerians whom she assembled to meet with me. Instructively, I had worked with most of them towards the passing of the Not Too Young to Run Bill into law to open more opportunities for young Nigerians to mount the saddle of leadership.

However, reduction of age limit for offices alone does not necessarily guarantee space in political leadership for younger Nigerians. So, I they should push for a change from the First Past the Post system currently practiced in Nigeria to Proportional Representation in order to maximise their strength as shown during the protests.

Proportional Representation has been adopted in Europe, East Africa, and even some West African nations (especially Francophone countries) to ensure that women, youths, and other groups are well accommodated in parliament without contesting elections on their individual strengths as currently the case in Nigeria.

EKWEREMADU GETS ANOTHER INT'L PARLIAMENTARY APPOINTMENT

The International Parliamentary Congress, IPC, has appointed Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, its Chief Coordinator for Africa.

The appointment was conveyed to Ekweremadu in a letter by the Secretary General of the IPC and member of the Pakistani national parliament, Senator Muhammad Ali Saif, in a letter dated October 26, 2020.

“We are proud to inform you that the Honourable President of the IPC has nominated your good self as Chief Coordinator Africa with immediate effect.

“IPC endeavours to promote parliamentary dialogue and oversight of Climate Change and Food Security; Human Rights; Peace, Security, Conflict Resolution and Interfaith Harmony; Trade, Investment and Development Corporation; Health Research; Standardisation, Quality Control, Human Development; and Observation of Elections across the world.Aa

“To support IPC in achieving the noble cause, your influence, experience and goodwill shall help cover the whole of African region, enabling the IPC to directly partake in projects for general welfare of African nations and to uphold democracy”, the letter read.

Meanwhile, Ekweremadu, who is also Nigeria’s sole member of the Malta-based International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace, the legislative arm of the by the Global Council for Tolerance and Peace, has accepted the appointment.

The former Speaker of the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS Parliament, while pledging to work for the realisation of the laudable ideals and objectives of the IPC, was optimistic that the world would benefit immensely from the rising influence of parliaments in global affairs.

“I, therefore, accept the appointment with utmost sense of humility and appreciation, mindful of the fact that injustice, repression, poverty, hunger, environmental degradation, and weakening of democracy and its values in any part of the world equally holds severe consequences for the rest of the globe, hence we must all come together to work for the good of all”, he added.

BEYOND SARS, SWAT, WE NEED TO DECENTRALISE POLICING, CREATE STATE POLICE NOW

The ongoing street protests over the excesses of elements in the Nigeria Police did not come to me as a surprise. As a matter of fact, I had always known, and warned severally that a day would come when Nigerians would no longer tolerate the worsening insecurity in the land and the excesses of those charged with protecting lives and property.

The problem with our policing and the attendant insecurity and excesses are engraved in Section 214 (1) of the 1999 constitution, which provides: "There shall be a police force for Nigeria, which shall be known as the Nigeria Police Force, and subject to the provisions of this section, no other police force shall be established for the Federation or any part thereof".

It is also worsened by Section 215 (2), which goes further to declare: "The Nigeria Police Force shall be under the command of the Inspector-General of Police and contingents of the Nigeria Police Force stationed in a state shall, subject to the authority of the Inspector-General of Police, be under the command of the Commissioner of Police of that state".

This informed my Bill for the Creation of State Police with adequate provisions in the mode of financing, control, and appointments of the high commands of such state police services to insulate them from any forms of abuse and give citizens roles in the various State Police Service Commissions. Unfortunately, this has not received the requisite political support, I call on the President and political stakeholders, once more, to seize the opportunity of the widespread demands for police reforms by Nigerians to do the right thing, addressing the structural challenges.

Nigeria is the only federal state with a unitary police. It has never worked anywhere. It is not working here and it will never work.

Therefore, whether we call it SARS or SWAT, we will only be addressing the symptoms instead of the diseases until we decetralise policing to allow citizens and the states take charge of the security of lives and properties of its people. This is the more reassuring way of addressing the mounting challenges of corruption, excesses, indiscipline, abuse, inadequate and poorly-motivated manpower as well as lack of equipment and security infrastructure currently bedevilling policing in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, a major lesson from the ENDSARS protests is that Nigerians can always engender the changes they desire if they act as one.

Sen ike Ekweremmadu the project senator earlier this week in Enugu West Senatorial District, this time, in Udi South, with Member representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency, Hon. Denis Oguerinwa Amadi.

We inspected/commisioned several ongoing/completed water, rural road/erosion control, and educational projects, etc.

Dennis Oguerinwa Amadi and other top Stakeholders stormed Udi North for inspection and commissioning of ongoing/completed Projects.

9th Mile - Nsukka - Orokam Express Road Project.

9th Mike-Nsukka Old Road Project.

Affa-Umuoka-Umulumgbe Road Project.

Reconstruction of 9th Mile - 82 Division Enugu end of the Enugu-Onitsha Road with an interchange at 9th Mile.

Completed/Ongoing Enugu West Water 4 All Initiatives Bore Holes, in addition to other 25 Projects comprising Erosion Control/Rural Roads, Electricity Projects, Primary Health Centres, School Blocks, etc.

"Work on the road projects, which have suffered setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic, are expected to resume and pick up at great speed immediately after the rains". -HE Sen Prof. Ike Ekweremmadu

Ikeoha Ndi-Igbo and his entourage also visited the 2000-hectre Lion Business Pack, a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative of the Enugu State Government and Chinese investors within the Enugu Free Trade Zone at 9th Mile Corner.

HE Distinguished Sen Prof. Ike Ekweremmadu has redefined personal integrity and strong political convictions when he remained firmly in our great party ( PDP ) even when it looks like the umbrella is sinking, even when it was no longer fashionable, when others abandoned the Umbrella, Ikeoha Ndi-Igbo remained firm.

He resisted every temptation to join the ruling APC, like most politicians without principles did. Despite his personal challenges, trials and tribulations as then leading opposition figure in Nigeria after the fall of PDP from power in 2015, Ikeoha Ndi-Igbo has not only remained resolutely firm and steadfast to his ideals and principles, he has helped nurse a dying opposition ( PDP ) back to life to keep our polity vibrant and healthy.

No doubt that Ikeoha Ndi-Igbo personal efforts and steadfastness played a major role in Reviving, Refreshing, Rejuvenating, Renewing and Restoring the Umbrella ( PDP ).

The Umbrella is currently incharge of Benue state, Adamawa state, Zamfara State, Edo State, Bauchi State, Oyo State and Sokoto State, thank you Ikeoha Ndi-Igbo.

This remarkable level of political consistency of Ikeoha Ndi-Igbo is an uncommon feature in a country’s polity that is characterised by unreliable political leaders.

Secondly he was a Deputy Sen President and for all Nigerians and as a deputy he did well to see that the senates was never compromised by the Executive etc and he fought for the development of all nation remember a tree can’t make a forest:

This men are not your problem In Enugu state.

They have shown plp of there constituency love and care with the reach of fund provide for them by the federal government and they used it as such the facts are all there.

He is not a senator for all Enugu state but he has carried along the Enugu state Government as well Lawrence Ugwuanyi should debunk this that most of 40percent project he clam to do was from Ike oha Enugu state.

Enugu youths Enugu Elders we are not here to fight or insult but let us tread with caution don’t be blind.
The Governor of the state should be responsible for security and economic development and if you don’t have it now hold him accountable not the Senators representing your constituency.

So 2023 is open

Senator Ike Ekweremmadu receive the PDP 2019 Post-Election Review Panel today when Chairman of the Panel and Governor of Bauchi State,his friend and brother, Senator Bala Mohammed, led his team, including Former Governor of Niger State, Dr. Babangida Aliyu; former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), and former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, among others to rub minds with him on the affairs of our party and the way forward.

He chaired similar panel to review PDP's performance in the 2015 election and this meeting was yet another opportunity to share experience and hold frank and fruitful discussions.

He stated that he has no doubt PDP will only get stronger as we forge ahead.

PROJECT INSPECTION IN AWGU LGA, ENUGU STATE LED BY SEN. PROF. IKE EKWEREMADU (Ikeoha Ndigbo) on 1st Sept. 2020 till date.

Enugu West projects inspection and monitoring term led by Ikeoha Ndigbo were in Awgu LGA to inspect ongoing projects and commissioned completed ones.

This tour afforded us the opportunity to see projects attracted by both Sen. Ekweremadu and Rt. Hon. Toby Okechukwu in Awgu LG respectively.

One amongst many projects that caught our attention was the Ugwueme Nenwenta-Mkwe Ezere Agwunta Obeagu Mgbidi Nmaku Road by IDC Construction.

This project is about 30km to 50km and cuts across difficult terrains but to the GLORY of God, Ikeoha performed his usual Miracle.

We need him to take charge of the state come 2023.
