Kibaha Beekeeping Training Project – Transforming Lives

We are proud to share the real impact of the Kibaha Beekeeping Training Project—where knowledge is turning into opportunity and communities are growing stronger every day.

So far, over 300 community members across Kibaha, Kigoma, Songea, and Singida have received hands-on training, with a strong participation of youth and women. The energy, commitment, and passion seen during these sessions truly reflect a community ready to transform their future.

Through this training, participants are not only improving their beekeeping practices but also building sustainable sources of income for their families. At the same time, they are becoming champions of environmental conservation—understanding the importance of protecting forests, biodiversity, and the ecosystems that support beekeeping.

A key highlight of the project is empowering participants with modern skills in harvesting high-quality honey, as well as branding and packaging—ensuring their products meet better standards and attract trust from consumers.

The results are inspiring: many participants are already experiencing increased income and improved livelihoods, along with growing confidence to run their own ventures.

This is more than just training—it’s about empowerment, sustainability, and real change on the ground.

Together, we are building a future where communities thrive in harmony with nature.

Some of the world's most important coastlines are in Latin America.

We are proud to be part of BLUE-ECONOMY-LAB, a collaboration we're leading together with partners in Colombia, Chile, Spain and Germany, working to strengthen vocational training in the blue economy sector across Latin America.

The project is co-funded by the EU's Erasmus+ programme and built around one shared question: how do we train the next generation of workers and educators for a sustainable ocean economy?

The focus is practical: coastal tourism, sustainable fisheries, marine biodiversity, and the green jobs that connect all of the above.

Over the past year and a half, we've been building a virtual training programme, running pilot projects on the ground in Chile and Colombia, exchanging best practices between our European and Latin American partners, and developing open-access resources that any VET provider can use in the future.

We've also brought many of these voices together at our Conference in Santa Marta, Colombia, a full programme of panels, speakers and working sessions on blue skills, ocean governance, sustainable fisheries, youth leadership and the future of blue jobs in Latin America.

We're well past the halfway point now, and there's a lot more still to share.

Exploring agroforestry solutions for salt-affected soils in southern Mozambique:

Even though the Mozambican Saline Agriculture Research and Practice (MoSARP) project formally came to an end in 2025, the partner institutions Associação dos Amigos do Bambu - ASSAMBA and IIAM Instituto de Investigação Agrária, supported by Weltweit-Cooperative for the Promotion of Local Initiatives e.V., keep up the important work. At the beginning of this year, they established a new agroforestry trial on salt-affected soils, hosted by IIAM’s ‘Saline Agriculture Best Practice Hub’ at the Moamba irrigation scheme. Under the challenging environmental conditions of the location, the performance of several promising bamboo and tree species is being evaluated. The aim is to identify suitable agroforestry species which will help to diversify local farming systems and support land restoration efforts. Students of Moamba’s technical college are closely being involved in the trial’s management and monitoring, as part of their training. We thank the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP) and Netherlands Food Partnership for making this initiative happen.

Ponta do Ouro, in Matutuíne District, is renowned for its pristine beaches, rich marine life, and remarkable fauna. It is one of the rare places where some of the world’s largest mammals can be observed within the same landscape, reflecting its exceptional natural value.

Beyond its environmental significance, Matutuíne also holds a strong and living cultural heritage. One important expression of this heritage is Xigubu, a traditional dance from southern Mozambique and South Africa. Xigubu symbolizes the strength, unity, and resilience of warriors, historically performed to prepare for and commemorate battles.

At ASSAMBA, we are planning the construction of a Bamboo Community Center within the Bamboo Park, envisioned as a space where local culture and nature come together. This center will serve as a platform to celebrate, practice, and transmit cultural traditions such as Xigubu, ensuring that these expressions remain visible, valued, and alive for future generations, while being housed in a sustainable, bamboo-based structure.

In a rural school in Nepal’s East-Central hills, a daily school meal has become the center of a locally driven system linking agriculture, education, public health, and climate resilience.

Each morning, students gather for assembly against a mountain backdrop. Nearby, a pot simmers with vegetables sourced from local smallholder farmers who are transitioning toward biodynamic practices. School gardens serve as living classrooms, where learning engages head, heart, and hands.

This initiative currently supports:
• Over 100 students receiving nutritious, locally grown meals
• More than 30 farmers strengthening soil health and reducing chemical dependency
• A shift toward smoke-free electric kitchens to improve community health
• Municipal co-funding to ensure long-term sustainability

What makes this model meaningful is not only the outcomes, but the ownership. Farmers, teachers, parents, and local government are shaping it together. It is designed to be replicable because it is grounded in local realities.

A school meal can be a lever for rural development when it is rooted in place.

What if your cooking fuel could help restore forests?

In Matutuíne, Mozambique, our partner ASSAMBA is turning fast‑growing bamboo into charcoal and briquettes – a local alternative to cutting remaining natural forests for firewood and conventional charcoal. With financial support from the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), 35 community members from Zitundo joined a hands‑on training to learn every step: selecting bamboo, carbonising it in simple kilns, refining the charcoal and pressing it into briquettes.

The first tests are promising: charcoal made from 2‑year‑old Dendrocalamus hamiltonii burned for 37 minutes, while the briquettes provided more than two hours of steady, clean heat for cooking. This community‑driven value chain strengthens local incomes, empowers women and youth, and shows how climate solutions can start right in the kitchen.

➡️ Swipe to see the journey from bamboo grove to finished briquettes and share to spread bamboo‑powered climate action.

Crafting Sustainability for a Greener Coast 🌱

At KECA, we believe in craft sustainability — turning local resources into lasting solutions for people and the planet. The photos showcase our hands-on bamboo craftsmanship, where raw bamboo is carefully cut, shaped, sanded, and assembled into strong furniture and even a bamboo bicycle frame.

This work highlights the strength, beauty, and versatility of bamboo as a sustainable alternative to timber. Fast-growing and climate-friendly, bamboo helps reduce pressure on forests while creating green economic opportunities for coastal communities. Every polished surface and precisely joined frame reflects skill development, innovation, and environmental responsibility.

These practical activities are closely linked to our upcoming tree nursery initiative, which will focus on growing bamboo and indigenous tree species. By combining conservation with craftsmanship, KECA is building a circular model — from nurturing seedlings to producing finished eco-friendly products.
Through craft sustainability, we are restoring ecosystems, empowering communities, and shaping a resilient, greener future. 🌿💚
