On Wednesday, 9 September, we had the pleasure of welcoming many guests to The Cyprus Institute for a Koto Recital by Akiharu Kitagawa, who performed on the koto, a traditional Japanese string instrument. 🎶🇯🇵

We would like to thank The Cyprus Institute for their collaboration and everyone who joined us for this special evening!

Ambassador Iwasaki visited the premises of the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation - CSEO on 31 August.

CSEO President Mr. George A. Danos and his team toured the Ambassador in the CSEO’s state-of-the-art facilities. Ambassador Iwasaki was impressed by the facilities in the heart of the old town bridging modern technology and space exploration with traditional Cypriot culture and architecture.

CSEO President Mr. Danos informed the Ambassador about CSEO’s cooperation with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and with the Japanese aerospace and engineering enterprise IHI Cooperation.

An MoU between CSEO and IHI was signed last year in Nicosia during an event of the international Committee on Space Research COSPAR.

The Embassy of Japan in Cyprus, in collaboration with the Friends of Cinema Society - ΟΜΙΛΟΣ ΦΙΛΩΝ ΚΙΝΗΜΑΤΟΓΡΑΦΟΥ, presents an evening of Japanese cinema featuring the acclaimed film Kokuho, an Official Selection of the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Nagasaki, 1964: Following the death of his yakuza father, 15-year-old Kikuo is taken under the wing of a famous kabuki actor. Alongside Shunsuke, the actor’s only son, he decides to dedicate himself to this traditional form of theatre. For decades, the two young men grow and evolve together – and one of them will become the greatest Japanese master of the art of kabuki.

We are deeply saddened by the tragedy of the sinking of a ferry off the coast of Kyrenia. The Embassy of Japan in Cyprus expresses its sincere condolences to those who lost their precious lives and extends its deepest sympathies to their bereaved families. 🎐Aki Kitagawa is a UK-based koto player and a member of the Sawai Koto Institute, performing on the Ikuta-ryū koto. His repertoire spans traditional and classical works, contemporary pieces, and original compositions. Through collaborations with musicians across the UK and Europe, he explores new creative possibilities for the koto and brings its distinctive sound to wider audiences.

Congratulations to Cyprus on winning a gold medal in judo!🏅🥋
We are delighted to celebrate the Cypriot judo-ka who won seven medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
They earned one gold, two silver and four bronze in judo. The gold medal was won by Mr Giannis Antoniou in the men’s +100kg category.

Congratulations to Mr Giannis Antoniou and the entire team! We hope judo continues to grow in Cyprus and brings our peoples even closer through sport. 😊

Call for Applications for the Professionals Working in Peacebuilding and International Development: Deadline is on Monday, 31 August 2026.

The Mid-Career Course (FY2026), commissioned by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, is a professional development course designed to help mid-level professionals working in peacebuilding and international development to further their careers and achieve their career goals. The in-person program takes place from 7 to 13 January 2027 in Hiroshima and Tokyo. The program will be conducted in English and welcomes applicants from a variety of countries with diverse backgrounds, including international organizations, the public and private sectors, as well as NGOs/NPOs.

The Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative Fund Grant will accept applications for single-year projects from September 1 to 30, 2026.

Grants of up to ¥5,000,000 (approximately €27,000) will be awarded to projects that demonstrate a clear association with Japan and meet either of the following criteria:
🎓 Engage in the fields of education or academic studies
🌍 Contribute to international cultural exchange and/or the enhancement of international goodwill
