This January, Cyprus assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at a politically challenging time. During an FES Cyprus briefing for the delegation of the EU Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, key priorities of the Cypriot presidency were discussed, including the Mediterranean strategy, European security, migration issues, and Cyprus’s role as an EU member state in the Middle East.

The delegation included Mr. Johannes Schraps (SPD), Dr. David Preisendanz (CDU/CSU), Mr. Alexander Radwan (CDU/CSU), Mr. Pierre Lamely (AfD), Mr. Julian Joswig (BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN), and Mrs. Janina Böttger (Die Linke).

The MPs were briefed by Prof. Hubert Faustmann, Head of FES Cyprus, and Marian Wendt, Head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Office in Greece and Cyprus.

Another focus was the domestic political situation, including rising political fragmentation and growing support for right-wing populists, which are increasingly shaping the current debate. Prof. Faustmann and Mr. Wendt underlined that the unresolved Cyprus conflict remains central, with little momentum toward reunification and ongoing pressure linked to Turkey’s role in the European security architecture.

👉 Germany’s responsibility as a close economic partner was also addressed, alongside the question of stronger European and German engagement with Cyprus—especially in security and Mediterranean policy domains.
