Ship-Owning Companies/ Tonnage Tax
For ship-owning companies, the profits derived by the owner of a ship registered in the European Union or European Economic Area (EEA) (as well as other foreign jurisdictions, subject to conditions) from its operation/charter out are fully exempt from all direct taxes. The term ‘owner’ includes a bareboat charterer of a non-Cyprus flag vessel parallel registered in Cyprus. A similar exemption applies to charterers and ship managers.|

Bareboat charter out agreements remain eligible for tonnage tax, with restrictions introduced for bareboat charter agreements to third parties. Grandfathering provisions are applicable for existing contracts that are captured by these restrictions.

Instead of Corporate Income Tax (CIT), ship owners, charterers, and managers pay tonnage tax on the net tonnage of the ships they own, charter, or manage. In addition, there is no tax on dividends paid at all levels of distribution by the above persons out of profits subject to tonnage tax and there is no taxation on the sale or transfer of a ship, share in a ship, or shares in a ship-owning company and their distributions. The same legislation also provides for income tax exemption of the salaries and benefits of the captain, the officers, and the crew aboard Cyprus and EU/EEA qualifying flag vessels engaged in qualifying activities.

This treatment applies until 31 December 2029 and is compulsory for Cyprus flag ship owners, but optional for other ship owners, charterers, and ship managers.

Taxation - Standard rate at 12,5%
Corporate income tax (CIT):
Corporates in Cyprus are taxed on their income accrued or derived from all sources in Cyprus and abroad.

A non-Cyprus tax resident company is taxed on income accrued or derived from business activity that is carried out through a PE in Cyprus and on certain other income arising from sources in Cyprus.

The standard CIT rate in Cyprus is 12.5%.

For ship-owning companies the profits derived by the owner of a ship registered in the European Union or European Economic Area(EEA) (as well as other foreign jurisdictions, subject to conditions) from its operation/charter out are fully exempt from all direct taxes. The term “owner” includes a bareboat charterer of a non-Cyprus flag vessel parallel registered in Cyprus. A similar exemption applies to charterers and ship managers.

Cypriot tax residences:

The income of the first €19,500 is tax free. Interest and dividends are liable to “defence contributions” but no income tax.

No capital gains tax on the sale of shares. In property only real estate Cyprus is taxed.

No inheritance tax.

Double Taxation Agreements
Cyprus has a network of double taxation treaties aiming to protect against the risk of a corporate entity or an individual being taxed twice where the same income is taxable in two states and further prevent tax discrimination against Cyprus-based-registered business interests abroad. They are important tools for tax planning and constitute a substantive advantage for Cyprus.

Cyprus has concluded double tax treaties with over 50 countries, whilst a further 40 are currently being negotiated. Most of these tax treaties, follow the OECD Model Convention, although the US-Cyprus tax treaty the most recent Model of United States Agreements.

New strategy for investors
The Cyprus Government in October 2021 presented a new strategy for attracting business with emphasis among others on innovation, shipping, high technology pharmaceutical, research and development, in an attempt to turn Cyprus into sustainable business and trade centre in the middle East and also Europe. The strategy includes 12 targeted actions in five pillars. The strategy is fully in line with the E.U legislation, the Long-Term Growth Strategy 2035 and the guidelines of the European commission, the Recovery and Resilience Fund. Eligible for inclusion in the scheme are foreign entities operating in Cyprus or those planning to operate, that have offices housed independently of other business and not provide homes.

Simplification of procedures:
The scheme includes acceleration procedures and facilitation unit that will provide services to set up a company, VAT and income tax registration, and social insurance registration and also to set up substance in Cyprus and expedite employment, residence permits and related applications.

Employment
The scheme allows employment of third-country nationals as long as they do not exceed 30 per cent of the total support staff and the parties have made an agreement that is approved by the authorities.

Residence
Residence permit maybe allow either by purchasing a house or apartment for €250.000 without the right of working or due to employment. The duration of residence for either category will be three years renewable.
The third country nationals will have the right to have their family. Also,
An immitted and free access to the job market, to spouses whose partner make at least €2.500 cross per month.
All above in acceleration process to secure employment permits, and social security.

Taxation
Tax breaks will be extended for investment in innovative businesses. Law taxation will continue apply while, individuals staying in the Republic for a period that exist 183 days during the same tax year they will be considered tax residence of Cyprus, enjoying all the tax benefits, provided there are not tax residence elsewhere. Investors will gain the right to apply for citizenship after leaving and working in the Republic for five years instead of the current seven.

Citizenship
The Government of Cyprus abolished the existing investment program for naturalization by exemption and formulated a citizenship scheme which is in complete harmonization with E.U Legislation aimed at a high net worth individuals and investors. In view of this the right to apply for citizenship after living and working in Cyprus is reduced to five years instead of the seven and for those holding a recognised certificate of the Greek language will be able to apply within 4 years.
