(SERBIA) Workshop on Sustainable Tourism Assessment held in Belgrade

On May 28, JICA, together with the Ministry of Tourism and Youth of the Republic of Serbia, organized a Workshop on Sustainable Tourism Assessment in Serbia in Belgrade.
The workshop brought together representatives from the Local Tourism Organizations (LTOs) and stakeholders from the project destinations — Senta, Pirot, Prijepolje, and Topola — together with municipalities, cultural and environmental institutions, tourism-related organizations, and UNDP as an observer, to discuss the results of the sustainable tourism assessment based on the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Destination Criteria.
Building on the first workshop held in December 2025, which focused on management and socio-economic aspects (Sections A & B), this workshop shared key findings from Sections C and D, focusing on cultural and environmental sustainability. Participants discussed both the strong foundations already existing in Serbian destinations including cultural heritage, local identity, protected natural areas, and environmental initiatives as well as practical next steps for strengthening destination management.
Through interactive discussions, participants exchanged ideas on realistic and feasible actions such as improving visitor understanding, strengthening stakeholder cooperation, and promoting small but impactful sustainability practices among tourism stakeholders.
The assessment process in Serbia has progressed smoothly and serves as an important model for other Western Balkan countries participating in the JICA Sustainable Tourism Project. Moving forward, JICA will continue to support Senta, Pirot, Prijepolje, and Topola in translating assessment findings into practical action, working together with local stakeholders to strengthen sustainable tourism practices tailored to each destination’s unique strengths and challenges.
