The Australian Embassy in Serbia hosted a working breakfast on 25 May bringing together Australian women entrepreneurs and female business leaders of Australian companies for a vibrant discussion on the situation facing women in business in Serbia.

Thanks also to our regular partner, UN Women Serbia, for sharing insights on the Serbian environment for women. It is clear women remain under-represented in many areas of business. It is also apparent that women need better support to achieve top leadership positions.

We shared not only the challenges women continue to face in business and leadership roles, but also practical ideas to make a difference. We all agreed on a few areas for focus: mentoring, professional networks, inclusive workplace cultures and stronger support for women entrepreneurs. And we decided to keep talking and exchanging views, both on problems and solutions.

Democracy is at the centre of the present and future of our two countries. In Australia we are proud of our democracy, and we do what we can to help other democracies and learn from them. The future of democracy for us both is in the hands of our young people. That is why the Australian Embassy was very pleased through our Direct Aid Program to support the preparation and publication of a handbook for youth at schools “How to build a democratic culture in schools”, written by two inspirational teachers and dedicated to strengthening democratic culture among young people.

Who can doubt that schools and educators play a crucial role in shaping future generations. So, Ambassador Truswell was honoured to take part in a reception to promote the handbook. This handbook encourages dialogue, participation, critical thinking and it helps create active citizens among today’s students.

We hope this handbook will serve as a useful and inspiring tool for educators and as an open space for dialogue with young people about democracy. We thank Mreza organizacija za decu Srbije for partnering with us on this excellent project.

It was a pleasure to meet with Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, to discuss opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Australia and Serbia in the resources and energy sectors. Our discussion focused on climate change, the transition toward Net Zero emissions, and the role of responsible investment in supporting long-term sustainable economic growth.

Australia’s resources sector brings significant global expertise, including in environmental management and critical minerals development. We welcome the opportunities for deeper commercial engagement in support of Serbia’s economic and energy transition objectives. We thank Minister Djedovic Handanovic for the discussion on enhancing cooperation between our countries and exchanging knowledge and experience on sustainable mining and in the renewable energy sector.

Ambassador Truswell hosted a reception for participants of this week’s judicial seminar that was organised in cooperation with the Judicial Academy. Great to see the seminars spark such valuable discussion and exchange of experience across our two different legal systems. For example, the role of the jury in Australia was of much interest, as was laws governing family violence. These kinds of exchanges between legal professionals can certainly strengthen the rule of law which is so important in both our countries.
We thank once again the Judicial Academy for hosting the seminar, as well as the many Serbian judges and prosecutors who gave up time from their busy schedules to participate, and of course the eminent Australian judges for devoting three days to the seminars and for travelling the long distance from Australia to help make this initiative such a success.

Ambassador Truswell was pleased to open a three-day judicial seminar on 18 May delivered by distinguished Australian judges - Judge Brana Obradovic of the the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2), and Judge Justin Smith of the New South Wales District Court for a lively group of Serbian judicial students and distinguished judges and hosted by the Judicial Academy.
We are honoured to welcome our Australian judicial experts to Serbia for this valuable exchange of knowledge and experience. We are especially pleased to see Judge Obradovic, a respected representative of the Serbian diaspora in Australia giving back to the country of her origin through her vast expertise and professional engagement.
The Australian Embassy thanks the Judical Academy for partnering with us on this important initiative. Strengthening judicial education and international legal cooperation helps support the rule of law, judicial independence and strong institutions.

A valuable meeting at the National Bank of the Republic of North Macedonia with Governor Trajko Slaveski who has visited Australia and has good connections with Australia’s Reserve Bank.

At a challenging time for the World economy, we had the opportunity to exchange perspectives on current economic developments and explore opportunities for deeper cooperation.

We appreciated the open and forward-looking discussion, a strong example of how dialogue can support more resilient economies.
