Since 1973 Finca Saramandaia has been our home, in addition to providing our family a living as hosts to hundreds of resident and tourist guests.
The property has always been maintained as an organic farm, producing beans, rice, coffee, bananas and other staple crops, as well as fruits and vegetables for ourselves and our guests.
We have deliberately kept the lower half of the farm undeveloped, preserving it as habitat for the resident fauna. We frequently see monkeys, sloths, tayras and anteaters, as well as dozens of species of birds. There are toucans, parrots, mot-mots, oropendolas and doves among others. The finca trails were for many years part of birder hiking tours and the farm itself has been a popular destination for resident artists at the Julia and David White Artist Colony.
The southern border of the farm is the Quebrada Honda, a year round stream/small river.
The northern border is a gravelled town road, leading to the centre of Ciudad Colon 1 km away. In Ciudad Colon one can connect with buses to anywhere in the country.
San Jose, the nation's capital, is a 30 minute bus ride. The main International airport, Juan Santamaria (SJO) is a 40 minute drive, and also reachable by bus.
The finca is being sold with all of the present furniture and appliances, and is move-in ready for a new owner and guest tenants. Most of our guests have been students and faculty at the nearby University for Peace and Airbnb clients.
The finca is in the low mountains west of San Jose, and perhaps not suitable for extensive future construction.
At the ages of 87 and 75 we are no longer the sturdy gazelles we were when we arrived in Costa Rica in 1971 with our two babies and boundless energy. We’d like to pass the finca on to another family to enjoy as much as we, our children, and now our grandchildren have enjoyed it.

The Main House is ~ 2000 sq ft under roof, and has four bedrooms and two bathrooms with showers on two levels. There is a utility WC and work sink (pila) at the end of ceiled main terrace, and another pila outside the downstairs east perch.
There’s a large open design living room, dining room, kitchen area on the main level. This includes a stove, oven, and marble baking slab ideal for serious cooks and bakers. This level also includes a west-facing porch with a magnificent view (and gorgeous sunsets) down the valley of the Rio Quebrada Honda.
The lower level has a kitchen area of its own with stove top, toaster oven, microwave, and refrigerator/freezer. It has its own west-facing porch for those great views.
With its own two exterior doors, it can be closed off from the upper level for mutual privacy when having guests.
The Main House has a solar hot water system with a backup electric water heater.
