The male Snowcap may get all the glory with his wine-purple plumage and brilliant white cap, but around this patch of verbena, she runs the place. Female Snowcaps may dress in more practical green and white, but don’t mistake subtle plumage for a subtle personality. This female has claimed these flowers as her territory and spends her day feeding, patrolling, and reminding visitors—feathered or otherwise—that the verbena comes with a landlord...

The boys may wear the crowns—but the Queen owns the castle. 👑

🌿🦜 The Graceful Black-throated Trogon 🦜🌿

A bird that reminds us why slowing down in the rainforest pays off.

The Graceful Black-throated Trogon is often first detected by its deep, rhythmic, far-carrying calls echoing through the forest long before it’s ever seen. Once located, it may remain motionless for several minutes, allowing patient birders and photographers the rare opportunity to admire one of Costa Rica’s most elegant forest species.

Look for its striking emerald-green upperparts, brilliant yellow belly, and bold black throat, beautifully accented by a crisp white breast band. Like all trogons, its unique foot structure (called heterodactyly)—with the first two toes pointing backward—is specially adapted for perching quietly in the forest understory.

Rather than chasing prey over long distances, the Graceful Black-throated Trogon watches patiently before making a short, precise flight to sn**ch insects, small fruits, or even tiny tree frogs and lizards, returning to the very same perch to begin the process again.

At Tayutic Mountain Reserve, this spectacular species is one of several trogons that reward visitors who take the time to pause, listen, and truly experience the rainforest.

For 250 years, the American spirit has been one of exploration, conservation, adventure, and appreciation for the natural world. We are incredibly grateful for the birders, photographers, filmmakers, nature lovers, and families from the USA who have become part of the TMR story.

Whether you’re watching fireworks over a city skyline or listening to the dawn chorus in a rainforest, may today remind us that the beauty of nature belongs to us all—and that protecting it is something that unites people across every border. 🌎🕊️

🎥 The Laughing Falcon — one of the voices of the rainforest at Tayutic Mountain Reserve (TMR)!

If you’ve ever heard a loud, rolling cackle echo through the forest, you’ve probably heard a Laughing Falcon. Its unforgettable call sounds remarkably like human laughter and can carry for long distances through the jungle.

This beautiful raptor is a true snake specialist, regularly hunting both venomous and non-venomous snakes with incredible precision. By helping keep snake populations in balance, the Laughing Falcon plays an important role in maintaining a healthy rainforest ecosystem.

At Tayutic Mountain Reserve (TMR), we’re fortunate to have these amazing birds as regular residents. They’re always a highlight for visiting birders and photographers—and hearing one call across the valley is an experience you’ll never forget.
