Out in Colombia's coffee fields we have met young people like Anderson, Gimena, Davier, Alejandra, Alexandra and Heiner. As smallholders, members of cooperatives, and sometimes monitors under the CMAS methodology, they are bridging the tradition of their communities with a strong drive for innovation in agriculture. This International , we celebrate their skill and involvement in more sustainable modes of production.

Today, on the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we recognize the work of our member organizations who work with indigenous communities to preserve traditional knowledge and bolster development for local communities.

Indigenous communities are stewards of crops, landraces, and sustainable agriculture techniques that are invaluable to our network.

Some projects are best understood in a meeting room, but others need to go out for a walk through coffee fields in Colombia. After closing our second phase of the Community-based Monitoring and Assurance System (CMAS), we sat down to reflect on what we have learned working side by side with farmers and community monitors.

For our Agrotalk podcast we recorded in Gaitania, in the coffee heartland of Tolima, Colombia. We spent a week visiting coffee associations, and spoke with coffee farmers and the community monitors who apply the CMAS methodolgy. Here's what we learned.

Add in Preferred by Nature and Rainforest Alliance raising the bar on traceability, and Fundación Natura supporting SAN's community-based monitoring work in Colombia, and it's clear: this is what radical collaboration for people and planet looks like. 🌍💚

Sustainability efforts go beyond planting trees. In fact, there are places that are reborn by realizing trees were not their solution. By rediscovering the value of native grasslands, people in the Kinangop Plateau were able to improve farmers' livelihoods and protect an endangered species.

Gaitania, Planadas, Colombia — Day 2 ☕🌱

Today was all about looking ahead. As we continued sharing CMAS results with coffee producers here in Planadas, the conversation turned to something big: how these improvements can open doors to new markets.

Producers are seeing firsthand how the information they gather through community monitoring helps them show buyers the quality and care behind their coffee. And because the data belongs to the community — collected by them, trusted by them — good practices are catching on across the whole chain, from farm to association to market.

It's a great example of how trust and ownership go hand in hand with real economic opportunity for coffee-growing communities.

This week we're sharing something we're really proud of! 🌱☕

For the past months, coffee associations here in Planadas have been putting the CMAS methodology into practice — using community monitoring to better understand their farms and their land. Today, we got to sit down together and share the results.

And what a response! It's clear this isn't just about collecting information — it's about giving farmers and associations the tools to make better decisions for their coffee, their communities, and their future. The more they know about their own production and landscapes, the more they can keep improving, season after season.

A huge thank you to the coffee associations of Planadas for their openness, hard work, and trust throughout this process. This is what community-driven change looks like. 💚
