The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, more than 240,000 Americans of all ages have responded to Kennedy’s call to serve and have helped communities in 161 countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and contributing to the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to support countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities. General Information

Today, Peace Corps staff worldwide - including in Costa Rica - wore denim in recognition of Denim Day and Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

Denim Day serves as a visual reminder to always believe and support survivors of sexual assault. At Peace Corps, we are dedicated to advancing prevention efforts and providing meaningful support for victims and survivors year-round. Through our Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program, we work hard to reduce risk, strengthen training, and provide trauma-informed response.

Each of us plays a role in contributing to the end of sexual violence and together we can, and are, making a difference.

Hoy, el personal del Cuerpo de Paz en todo el mundo - incluso en Costa Rica - vistió sus jeans en reconocimiento del Denim Day y del Mes de Concientización y Prevención de la Violencia Sexual.

El Denim Day ( Día del Jeans ) sirve como un recordatorio visual para apoyar siempre a las personas sobrevivientes de la violencia sexual. En Cuerpo de Paz, estamos comprometidos con avanzar en los esfuerzos de prevención y brindar apoyo a víctimas y sobrevivientes durante todo el año. A través de nuestro programa de Prevención y Respuesta a la Violencia Sexual (SAPR), trabajamos arduamente para reducir el riesgo, fortalecer la capacitación y ofrecer una respuesta informada al trauma.

Cada uno de nosotros tiene un rol para contribuir en la erradicación de la violencia sexual. Juntos podemos y estamos haciendo una diferencia.

¡No hay navidad sin tamal!

In Costa Rica, preparing and eating tamales is a tradition during the Christmas season. A tamal is a food made with corn dough, pork, vegetables and seasoning wrapped and steamed inside a banana leaf.
Volunteers often join their families and community members to assemble and cook massive quantities of tamales to share!

RPCVs, did you make tamales during your service? Current Volunteers, are you making them this year?

En Costa Rica, preparar y comer tamales es una tradición durante la temporada navideña. Un tamal es un alimento hecho con masa de maíz, carne de cerdo, vegetales y condimentos, envuelto y cocido al v***r dentro de una hoja de plátano.

Five English Education Volunteers recently participated in a workshop series at the American Corner's library in Limón called Critical Creativity in Action: Creative Tools for Meaningful Language Learning, hosted by English Language Fellow Dr. Pearlie Lubin.

Recientemente, cinco personas Voluntarias del programa de la Educación en Inglés participaron en una serie de talleres en la biblioteca del American Corner en Limón, titulada Creatividad Crítica en Acción: Herramientas Creativas para un Aprendizaje Significativo del Idioma, organizada por la Dra. Pearlie Lubin, English Language Fellow.
