Did you know that inside a chrysalis, a caterpillar undergoes one of nature's most incredible transformations, that scientists are still trying to understand?
The secret behind nature's biggest glow-up is hidden inside the caterpillar. The chrysalis era begins when the caterpillar sheds its last larval exoskeleton. Some caterpillar tissues break down into an energy-rich goop, while other parts remain. Special cell groups called imaginal discs recycle the cellular goop to grow wings, legs, eyes, antennae, and mouthparts.
What looks like a still, quiet chrysalis is actually busy and alive. Some of them have some cool defensive mechanisms where they wiggle around, mimic other things, and use camouflage to avoid their predators!
