Recently, we joined Red de Mujeres Rurales, a group of rural and indigenous women, in protesting a reform which would regulate the commercialization of seeds. This would seriously threaten small-scale subsistence growers, as well as the culturally and ancestrally important activity of communal seed exchange, in favour of large commercial interests. We were proud to voice our oppostion in solidarity with these women, and we conducted various interviews with them on behalf of Comunicadoras Comunitarias. On Thursday 10th, students on the Socioeconomic Geography course at the university of Costa Rica visited the Centre. Veronica, cofounder of the Center, and Chita, a lady from the Guacimal community, gave a presentation which explained the community’s fight for the defense of its water against a proposed development project – the key event in the foundation of the Center. The students visited the pristine river next to the center, where they observed our lab volunteer Ania demonstrate water sampling and had the opportunity to have a swim. Finally, Ania and Veronica explained the process of testing water in the Center’s brand new laboratory. The laboratory will be made available to communities for free water quality testing.

Last Sunday, we the members of various local communities went on a visit to Monteverde and areas of the upper watershed of the Guacimal river, led by Cristy and Zuiri from the University of Costa Rica’s Environmental Kiosks program. We were shocked to see obvious signs of sewage in water courses, and expressed concerns about communities lower down the Bellbird Biological Corridor whose drinking water filters down into their wells and sources of water. We were welcomed at the San Luis Community Center, where we engaged in conversation with representatives of the Monteverde Institute and the Township Association of San Luis. We discussed shared experiences of water quality and pollution, existing problems and proposed solutions.

We hope to make our new water-testing laboratory at the Center available to local communities to conduct water quality tests. Read more about the lab on our website: https://www.sustainablecostarica.org/index.php/en/aguavida/what-we-do

Sustainability Demonstration Centre - In a Nutshell

We aim to demonstrate, in a constructive and detailed manner, different environmentally friendly ways of dealing with and reducing the footprints we each leave behind every day. We help create alternative ways for people to make a living which are healthy, just and in harmony with the environment.

We envision a world where our health, and the health of the planet, weigh as much as making a profit.

At our Experimental Integrated 112-acre Farm, learning about how to grow safe, delicious, and nutritious food brings together families and community members with an appreciation for the food we eat. By choosing to produce and eat organic food, we no longer eat food that is laden with chemicals that make us, our land, and our water unhealthy. In addition, humane animal husbandry is practiced and demonstrated.

Economic and Social Justice is practiced continuously through the various initiatives of the Center. One of its most successful efforts is the Guacimal's Farmer's market which has been open every Saturday since 2014. It provides free space for any local to come and sell their products. It is also a space for healthy family fun, good food and live marimba music to keep the traditions alive and to build a strong social fabric.
