Western International School of Shanghai - WISS

Western International School of Shanghai - WISS The Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) is the first and only full continuum World IB School in Mainland China.

WISS is a leading international school in Shanghai and the first and only full continuum World IB School in Mainland China offering the four programmes of the International Baccalaureate IBPYP, IBMYP, IBDP and IBCP. Educating young people from across the globe in a caring and inspirational environment since 2006 and WISS strives to send compassionate, brave, ethically-minded global citizens into t

he world. As an IB World School, WISS is uniquely placed to promote new perspectives and broaden the minds of the children in our care; deepening their sense of understanding and wonder. Working with children from the age of 3 to 18, our students represent more than 50 different nationalities. This exciting blend of cultures and ethnicities allows us to explore challenging aspects of the world around us through a rigorous curriculum of inquiry-based learning. Whether our students are with us for a year or two, or stay through to graduation and move on to the university of their dreams, we want our young people to look back on WISS as a time when their love of learning was awakened and they began to touch the lives of those around them. Inspiring minds, to shape the future.

They came in as Grade 6 kids. They're leaving as young leaders.

The WISS Grade 10 Advancement Ceremony, marking the completion of the IB Middle Years Programme.

Five years. One incredible journey.

From the laughs that filled the room during Evan Fang's memory video, to Logan Schweigert's moving speech about luck, hard work, and the people who shape us — every moment reminded us why we do what we do.

What stood out most? It was watching students who serve. Students who create. Students who compete. Students who care.

After their Explore China trip to Sanya, students came home with a mission: to continue supporting Sanya Bright Connection, an organisation that helps children living with disabilities. 💛

As Mr. Themba Gwamanda said it best: "Choose the door that leads to your passion."

That's the WISS difference.

Congratulations to Grade 10 students.

Breaking News from Grade 5.

Setting new school records in “most questions asked in a single lesson” to a weather forecast predicting a 100% chance of parent tears (and a 70% chance of students pretending they’re "fine"), this is a tribute to the years that made them.

Some kids have been here six years. Some just arrived this year. They all crossed the same stage together.

What matters is how it grows. Our Grade 5 graduates wrapped up their PYP journey with tears, laughter, and one very memorable disco party on Explore China.

They're heading into the MYP as curious minds, kind hearts, and brave humans. We are proud of you.

One moment, they are holding your hand, unsure of what awaits them. Next, they are standing at the edge of a bridge—confident, curious, and ready for Primary School.

Our Kindergarten Crossing the Bridge ceremony is more than a tradition. It is a celebration of every small victory that brought them here: the friendships formed, the challenges overcome, the questions asked, and the confidence gained.

As each child crossed the bridge, they carried with them a year of growth through Academics, Arts, Sports, and Service—and took their first steps toward an exciting new chapter.

And if there was one thing shared by every family in the room, it was the same thought:

"How did they grow up so fast?" ❤️🌉

Western International School of Shanghai, ESG does not begin in theory. It begins in Primary School.

Through the IB PYP Exhibition, our Grade 5 students explored real-world challenges linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and turned their learning into meaningful action.

They identified every tree on campus and created nameplates so our community could better understand and protect the natural world around us.

They researched the impact of plants on focus, stress, and wellbeing, raised the funds themselves, and placed a living plant in every Primary classroom.

They learned about composting from gardeners and community experts, then passed that knowledge on to younger students — showing even five-year-olds how food waste can give back to the earth.

At WISS, we believe children should not wait to grow up before they make a difference.

They can start now. And they do.

From Tigers to Trailblazers 🐯🎓

Last week, our WISS community came together to celebrate something truly special—the graduation of our Grade 12 Class of 2026. It was a night filled with pride, reflection, and just the right amount of happy tears.

These students didn’t just earn their diplomas—they grew into confident, compassionate individuals through years of challenge, discovery, and connection. Whether in academics, arts, sports, or service, they embraced every opportunity to learn and lead.

One unforgettable moment came from Salutatorian Keisei Nishimura, who shared how he arrived four years ago knowing only one English sentence—and stood on stage delivering a powerful speech. A true reminder of what courage and perseverance can achieve.

Valedictorian Song Xi Lucas Jiang captured the spirit of the class perfectly: “We will never be predictable.” And they won’t be.

As they head to universities around the world, they carry more than knowledge—they carry values, friendships, and a global mindset shaped here at WISS.

Congratulations, Class of 2026. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger. 🐯

“Will my child be ready for the next grade?”

It’s one of the most common questions parents ask — especially during times of change.

At WISS, we don’t leave that transition to chance.

Our Step Up Day gives Early Years and Primary students the opportunity to experience what’s next before the new school year begins. They walk into their future classrooms, meet their teachers, and begin forming the confidence they need to thrive.

Because for many children, it’s not the learning that feels difficult — it’s the unknown.

By making the unfamiliar feel familiar, we help students move forward with calm, curiosity, and excitement.

At WISS, an IB international school in Shanghai, we believe every child deserves to feel ready — not rushed.

Is your child confident enough to stand up, speak out, and truly express themselves?

At many schools, academic success is clear — but confidence, creativity, and real-world skills can be harder to build.

At WISS, we believe education must go beyond grades.

This term, our Secondary students brought The Servant of Two Masters to life — a fast-paced Italian comedy that demanded courage, collaboration, and quick thinking. From perfectly timed comedy to high-energy ensemble work, students didn’t just perform — they grew.

Behind every moment of laughter was months of dedication, teamwork, and personal growth.

Because when students feel safe to take risks, they learn to lead.

If you're searching for an IB international school in Shanghai that develops the whole child, WISS offers more than education — we build character, confidence, and capability.

Some of the most powerful life lessons don’t come from textbooks — they come from experience.

At WISS, our Explore China programme takes students in Grades 3–5 beyond the classroom and into the real world.

🌱 Grade 3 got their hands dirty farming on Changxing Island, made dumplings, and reflected on gratitude and growth.
🦀 Grade 4 explored Chongming Island’s wetlands, studied ecosystems, tried crab fishing, and learned what it means to care for our environment.
🖌️ Grade 5 immersed themselves in Chinese heritage — from Huizhou ink making to calligraphy, tea culture, and stone rubbing.

These journeys are about more than learning — they’re about curiosity, resilience, reflection, and connection.

They return with muddy boots, ink-stained fingers, and stories that will stay with them for life.

Education is a journey.

At Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), we keep coming back to one question:

What does a child need to thrive—not just in school, but in life?

Our answer isn’t a ranking. It’s four pillars, lived every day:
• Arts – building confidence through self-expression
• Academics – nurturing curiosity and deep thinking
• Sports – developing resilience and teamwork
• Service – growing empathy by caring for others

Choosing a school is a big decision, and it belongs to you.

At WISS, we welcome families who are exploring, questioning, and still figuring things out. We offer an honest look at who we are—and whether we’re the right fit for your child.

Join us at our Open House. Meet our teachers, see our students in action, and take the time to discover what education can be.
