Shanghai Guangming High School, established in 1886 (The twelfth year ruled by Emperor Guangxu in Qing Dynasty), enjoys a history of more than a century and a glorious tradition. It was established by Frenchmen and was originally named French School, which was changed into Sino-French School in 1911 and Sino-French High School in 1946. In the 1950s, it was under the jurisdiction of Yimiao District
and appointed Key School; in the 1960s, the organizational unit of Yimiao District and Penglai District was annulled and the school was placed under the jurisdiction of Huangpu District. In 1978 it was appointed Key School in the District. Guangming High School is a Key School in Huangpu District. It covers an area of 6336 square meters, and the total construction area is 12818 square meters. It is composed of two classroom buildings and one playground. Built in 1923, of the French architectural style, the three-floor old building is excellent latter-day architectural achievement in Shanghai. The 16-floor new building, completed in 1997, is a teaching assistance building. It has labs for sciences, library, reading rooms, language labs, music and art room, room for labor capacity, Multimedia room, dancing room and multifunctional room, and offices for teachers, administers and party workers. The school has 220 PCs; all offices and classrooms are connected by school network and have easy access to internet. Guangming High School has 32 classes and a student population of 1700. It has a teaching faculty of 160, among who are two teachers of a special classification, 42 Senior Teachers, 46 middle-class teachers, accounting for 75 of the faculty. The school has formed a teaching body which is conscientious, professional, dignified and devoted to the profession and the students as well. Guangming High school’s guiding ideology is to adamantly carry out quality education, and ensure that all is done for the lifelong development of students. The school’s objective is to build a school with a sound humanistic education and to cultivate students of sound spiritual mind. The school has formed the feature of “giving priority to moral and humanistic education, developing students harmoniously, and teaching students according to their individual aptitude” and defined the school spirit of “being civilized, plain, diligent and disciplined”. It has launched the Project of Guangming Student Image, with a view of cultivating the very image of bright students who are fit, ambitious, knowledgeable and broadminded. Guangming High School is the pilot base for Shanghai second-stage teaching reform. It has been actively exploring the teaching reform and combining teaching and researching, and has made successive development and achievements in the aspect of the opening of research courses, the trying out of bilingual teaching, the combination of information technology and various subjects.
