UKPNP was formed by progressive nationalists of Pakistan controlled Kashmir in 1985 to change the political narrative on Kashmir as prevailing political views coined by Islamabad and New Delhi that misrepresented the Kashmir context and sentiments. The exploitation of human and natural resources were catalyst in nurturing and shaping political ideology and social psychology of progressive national
ists youth in Pakistan controlled Kashmir and poor socio-economic conditions and political deprivation remained unattended and unrepresented. As a result, political and economic marginalization of Pakistan controlled Areas gave birth of new ideology seeking equal rights, political ownership and economic empowerment of Pakistan controlled Kashmir. In broader Kashmir conflict UKPNP aim has been to provide a parallel inclusive narrative that represent all regions, its people, cultures, faiths, languages and ethnicity-not only valley centric- and be equal stakeholders in shaping up its future. Nationalism in three parts of Jammu, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan has had different background and history prior and during Gulab Singh Dynasty that nurtured collective nationalism during his dynasty but partitioned of India and subsequent physical and ideological interventions by two dominions India-Pakistan imposed their favorable opinions among their controlling parts through proxy political parties and politicians that overshadowed the real voices, and legitimate grievances and dominated Islamabad version of anti-India nationalism in the grab of Kashmiri nationalism further distorted historical and political realities and genuine aspirations of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. Keeping disparate approaches and perspectives of different regions UKPNP being progressive, secular and democratic organization endeavored to have holistic and inclusive approach to deter communalization of the polity. The social unity of the people is more important than the territorial unity, which hardly sought attention across the spectrum as anti, and pro, forces are unleashed to neutralize the voice that represents collective interests.
