inter:archive presentation at this Sunday for

Initiated in 2020, inter:archive is a non-exhaustive, ‘particip-active’ project that seeks to shed light on the concept of ‘intersectionality’ – or ‘intersectional feminism’. In short, ‘intersectionality’ argues for the presence of not a single but overlapping oppressions based on social categorizations, such as gender, race, ethnicity, class, religion, sexuality, migratory status. Thinking intersectionally means to take ‘a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects’ as stated by scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, who first coined the term in 1989.

The collaboration with VOLUMES forms one of inter:archive’s main engagements. After hours spent at the VOLUMES archive library, it resulted in a collection of publications that subtly relate to the topic. This activation also aspires to support VOLUMES in growing its archive further. Indeed, inter:archive is interested in going beyond the mere selection of publications and categorization. It wants to develop over time and engage further with the topic, i.e. by integrating more sources, interviews, readings, artist contributions, etc. – and shaping a sphere to imagine plural futurities.

In a nutshell, inter:archive collects the multiple voices that rise from literature and art to emancipate and highlight intersectional lived experiences.

The project is conceived by curators , , , as part of the curatorial programme of the Project Space.

Read more about it here: https://www.volumeszurich.ch/collection/interarchive-digital-platform

The VOLUMES Archive is a collection of zines, artist books and publications, which exists thanks to the many donations we receive annually for our international open call and award exhibition. Taking this library as a site of investigation, we have been researching new forms for organising and understanding the paradigm of the archive. Please get in touch with us if you would like to visit it. We also happily accept donations of your zines and printed matter, feel free to mail them to us 🤓

Reading room and collective zine making by ISTERIKA ISTORIKA this Sunday at for

ISTERIKA ISTORIKA is an informal reading group exploring femminist, transfemminist and q***r narratives. Focusing on science fiction, fantasy, dystopian fiction and critical theory, it creates a non-academic, open and horizontal space for discussion. For VOLUMES, ISTERIKA proposes a stretched and deconstructed version of the reading group, setting up a reading/working table and inviting the public to join an ongoing conversation and participate in the production of a collective zine.

ISTERIKA ISTORIKA was born in Torino, in autumn 2020, as a collaboration between artists Caterina Giansiracusa and Sara Cattin, along with Denise Cappadonia, owner and curator of , q***r and transfeminist bookstore in Turin (IT). What started as a monthly meeting moved by the wish to explore the world of feminist science fiction, created an open and collective space to think together. The intent is to approach contemporary issues in a collective mode, through the meeting points offered by feminist and transfemminist narratives. Q***r sci-fi and other related visionary genres become a way to explore narrative freedom, looking for new languages and worlds, taking small steps outside of our own comfort zone.

Performance by Anissa Nussbaumer at 2pm and 4pm on Sunday 19/11 at for

MATERIAL ORAKEL is an installation and performance that the artist makes in collaboration with a book. Its pages originally come from almost four hundred different publications from MATERIAL. The pages chosen and edited by the artist have the function of promises in the new book.
Do you need inspiration for the New Year? Or do you have a specific question? The oracle provides.

Anissa Nussbaumer lives and works in Zurich. In her artistic work, she deals mainly with so- cio-cultural themes. Driven by confrontations with her own borderline experiences, the artist draws from subcultural worlds, religious rituals, philosophical theses and scientific classifications. In doing so, she resorts to various media, from the written word to painterly experiments to performance.

MATERIAL ORAKEL
Installation & Performance, 2021, Anissa Nussbaumer

While in Kazan, we were given an insightful tour of the newly open library and of its current exhibition about the global world of Tatar books.

The exhibition contains several sections, from the era of the Golden Horde to the Soviet period. Each section of the exhibition shows not only the continuity of different periods in the development of the Tatar book culture, but also dramatic breaks, such as the changes from Arabic alphabet to Latin then Cyrillic script. During the heyday of handwritten culture in the eighteenth century, you can see signs of globalization: the Tatars rewrote Persian texts on Dutch paper and left notes in them in Russian. The unusual section “Magic and Medicine” gives an idea of how the Tatars borrowed and interpreted the medical treatises of the Indo-Persian culture. The beginning of the last century saw the Tatars move between Arabic graphics, Latin and Cyrillic. Typography in the Arabic script reached its climax, the Latin alphabet was associated with modernity, and the Cyrillic alphabet united the Tatars with the entire Soviet culture. Letters of all these alphabets are displayed as an installation in the main hall.

The building, conceited during the Soviet period and built in Armenian stone, wears a few traces of Soviet propaganda, such as large indoor sculptures.

A special prize for DIY face masks goes to and . Many thanks to .lukyanova.ru and for organizing this visit during our stay!

Our Story

VOLUMES is a non-profit organisation and collective which was created in Zürich in 2013 to support the local and international DIY-facet of art publishing and introduce it to a larger audience in Switzerland.

Operating in various locations, the organisation’s main event is an eponymous book fair which takes place annually in Zürich at the end of November. The fair showcases the production of local and international independent publishers as well as self-published artists who use small means of production. Exploring the practices and experiments gravitating around the practices of art publishing, the event also offers to the visitor a series of experiences such as performances, workshops, talks, projections and book exhibitions.

VOLUMES is building an archive of artist books and zines which are mainly donated. The collection is showcased online and exhibited at fairs, workshops and presentations.

All the events organised by VOLUMES are made possible by the involvment of artists and publishers, the funding contributions and the limitless enthusiasm and engagement of the team of organisers, technicians and helpers.
