Final collisions, new horizons 💫

After 12 years in operation, a record amount of data and thousands of scientific results, the Large Hadron Collider is taking a break. It will be transformed into the , an even more powerful machine.

Can you guess what they are doing? 👀
Hint: it might have something to do with the ATLAS Experiment at CERN

Here we see scientists at CERN carrying out a test insertion of a stave into the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) Strip Barrel.

The ITk is a new all-silicon inner detector of the ATLAS Experiment at CERN, which will replace the current inner detector to take advantage of the higher luminosity of the – the successor to CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.

The staves are key components of the detector and consist of a lightweight support structure with integrated electrical, optical and cooling services, together with high-precision silicon sensor modules.

In conversations with Head of LHC Operations Bettina Mikulec, Director for Accelerators Oliver Bruning and Director for Research and Computing Gauthier Hamel de Monchenault, host Davide De Blasio will guide you through the legendary journey of the most powerful particle collider in the world, today on the threshold of a new transformation. Physicists from ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE will join from their experiments’ control rooms to share the highlights of the last four years of physics and the challenges of the transition to the High Luminosity phase, when they will have to process an enormous volume of data for a new era of physics discoveries.
