These powerful words from a member of the women’s chess team at Yerawada Women’s Prison capture something profound about what chess can bring into people’s lives.

On the 64 squares, players learn to pause before acting, think ahead, consider consequences, manage emotions, take responsibility for decisions, and adapt when things don’t go as planned.

But perhaps one of the most beautiful things chess can offer is a sense of possibility.

Inside a prison, a chessboard can become a space where the walls seem to disappear for a while — a place to focus, to learn, to compete, to connect with others, and to imagine a different next move.

As one player reflected:
“If I had done that before making the mistakes in my life, I would not have been here.”

Chess cannot change the past. But it can help people develop the tools to approach the future differently.

And that is why Chess in Education—and chess in correctional settings—matters. Because chess is not only about finding the best move on the board. It is about learning to find a better move in life.

📢 FIDE EDU and AIDEF announce their 6th "Preparation of Teachers" course in French 🇫🇷

The FIDE Chess in Education Commission, in collaboration with AIDEF, is pleased to announce the upcoming 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 course in French. 🎓♟️

📅 The course will be held online from October 30 – November 1, 𝟐𝟎𝟐6.

👩‍🏫👨‍🏫 The course is designed for teachers, chess educators, beginner and advanced players who already have basic chess knowledge and experience working with children.

🏫 This specially tailored course focuses on chess as an educational tool in the classroom and is delivered entirely in French. 🇫🇷 Good command of the language is essential.

🏆 Participants who successfully complete the course and pass the final exam with a minimum score of 65% will be awarded the 𝐅𝐈𝐃𝐄 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 title.

💻 In addition, they will receive 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗨𝗠 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀, containing more than 9.6 million official over-the-board games. ♟️📚

🕓 Schedule: 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM CET (Paris time), daily

⏱️ Total Duration: 15 hours (including the final exam)

🇫🇷 Denis Lemouton (France) – FIDE Senior Lead Instructor (SLI), Primary School Teacher, AIDEF School Training Coordinator, and trainer at the French Chess Federation.
