How is the International Labour Organization changing lives through social protection?

Since 2016, the ILO’s Global Flagship Programme on Building Social Protection Floors for All has contributed to extending social protection to more than 100 million additional people worldwide.

How? By working with governments, workers’ and employers’ organizations and development partners to build and strengthen national social protection systems, from supporting the design and reform of schemes guided by international social security standards to improving their administration and delivery.

Behind these numbers are real changes in people’s lives. People who, through the realization of their human right to social protection, have a better chance of retiring with dignity, caring for themselves and their loved ones during sickness or disability, accessing vital healthcare and providing for their families in times of transition and crisis.

And the impact looks different in every country.

Workers are people with hopes, dreams, and aspirations for themselves and their families.

That’s why paid work is about more than meeting material needs—it should also leave room for life outside work. In today’s world, that means a healthy work–life balance.

Working time has been central to the International Labour Organization work for more than a century—starting with the Hours of Work (Industry) Convention, 1919 (No. 1), which aimed to limit excessive hours and protect workers’ health and well-being. Yet for millions of workers, long hours and too little rest are still a reality.

Recently, ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo had a productive few days of meetings in Thailand, where he spoke at the ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting. He stressed the need to invest in people, skills, and social dialogue for growth and resilience, and the importance of ILO-ASEAN cooperation to achieving this goal.

He met with Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and discussed the country’s vision of strengthening competitiveness through investing in people.

He also met with Deputy Prime Minister, Yodchanan Wongsawat, and Minister of Labour, Julapun Amornvivat, and welcomed Thailand’s decision to join the Global Coalition for Social Justice. They also spoke about the possibility of ratifications of ILO Conventions 87 and 98.

In productive meetings with representatives of Thai employer and worker organizations, cooperation with the International Labour Organization and its new Convention on Decent Work in the Platform Economy were common themes of the discussions.

Domestic workers are among the workers most exposed to informality, forced labour, child labour, discrimination, and violence and harassment. Climate shocks, conflict, migration, demographic change and digital transformation are also reshaping domestic work and increasing vulnerabilities.

Convention No. 189 offers a way forward: a framework to ensure that changes in the world of work lead to decent jobs instead of deeper inequality.

Advancing C189 is part of the broader fight for social justice and equality.

“A mine doesn’t forgive mistakes.”

For Ivan Katolik, a miner and trade union technical safety inspector in Kazakhstan, safety is part of every descent underground.

After 19 years in mining, he knows how quickly a small oversight can become a serious risk.

Through ILO training on occupational safety and health, Ivan and other miners are strengthening prevention, social dialogue and workers’ voices in Kazakhstan’s mining sector.

After 19 years underground, Ivan Katolik knows why occupational safety and health must come first.

A miner and trade union technical safety inspector in Kazakhstan, Ivan participated in ILO training that is helping strengthen workers’ voices, prevention and social dialogue in mining.

Because in a mine, even a small oversight can lead to serious consequences, and everyone must be able to raise safety concerns.
