UN Trade and Development

UN Trade and Development Official account of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD). We work to ensure everyone benefits from the global economy. Website: https://unctad.org/subscribe

UNCTAD, which is governed by its 194 member States, is the United Nations body responsible for dealing with development issues, particularly international trade – the main driver of development. Its work can be summed up in three words: think, debate, and deliver. Reflection on development is at the heart of UNCTAD’s work. It produces often-innovative analyses that form the basis for recommendations to economic policymakers. The aim is to help them take informed decisions and promote the macroeconomic policies best suited to ending global economic inequalities and to generating people-centred sustainable development. UNCTAD is also a forum where representatives of all countries can freely engage in dialogue and discuss ways to establish a better balance in the global economy. In addition, UNCTAD offers direct technical assistance to developing countries and countries with economies in transition, helping them to build the capacities they need to become equitably integrated into the global economy and improve the well-being of their populations. UNCTAD holds a ministerial-level meeting every four years to discuss major global economic issues and to decide on its programme of work. It also holds discussions with civil society, including at an annual symposium where members of the public can express their views and interact with country representatives. Every two years, UNCTAD organizes the World Investment Forum, which brings together major players from the international investment community to discuss challenges and opportunities and to promote investment policies and partnerships for sustainable development and equitable growth.

When a disruption in the Strait of Hormuz pushes up energy, shipping and insurance costs, the shock does not land on a level playing field.

A small business in a developing economy borrows at 15.8%. A similar business in a developed economy borrows at 6.3%.

New analysis from UN Trade and Development shows what that gap does under pressure. Smaller firms have fewer suppliers to switch to, less cash to absorb a shock and harder access to credit. Trade volumes can recover while those firms are left out of the recovery.

Keeping trade moving is not enough. Smaller firms have to stay connected to it.

623 proposals.

That is how many ideas came in for the second Supply Chain Innovation Challenge, now closed — ideas for keeping goods moving when supply chains break down.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter.

The evaluation has started. Finalists will hear from us at the end of September and will present their idea at an online ceremony, where the winner is announced. Everyone who entered is invited to watch.

In Hangzhou, artificial intelligence is already at work in unexpected places: making silk production more sustainable, running finance and management, powering robotics.

On the first day of his visit to China, Pedro Manuel Moreno, Acting Secretary-General of UN Trade and Development, met the entrepreneurs building it, spoke at the opening ceremony for the first doctoral cohort of Zhejiang University's Institute of Global Development, visited the Future Science and Technology City and met Professor Ren Shaobo, Chairman of the Zhejiang University Council.

One idea ran through the day: technology only serves people if they can reach it — and that depends on how closely research and industry work together.

A growing share of world trade now travels down a wire: software, design, accounting, data work.

These services make up 56% of global services exports. In the least developed countries, just 16%.

Slow internet, no easy way to be paid from abroad, few digital skills — the barriers are practical, and artificial intelligence could make them worse.

Trade decides what food costs, which factories hire, and which countries get to grow.

UN Trade and Development was created in 1964 to help developing countries get a fairer share of it. Today we work with 195 countries to manage debt, move goods across borders faster, attract investment and widen access to digital technology.

Design, data, engineering, back-office work: most of what the world sells in services can now be delivered online. That share has reached 56%.

The least developed countries account for 0.6% of the world's services exports.

It is not a question of talent. It comes down to connectivity, payment systems and skills — what decides whether a small firm can invoice a client on the other side of the world.

The rules for digital trade are being written now. They will decide who gets to trade tomorrow.

The race to invest in artificial intelligence, chips and clean energy is on. Lower-income countries are getting just 10% of it.

That means risking missing out on the industries that will define the next decade. Finding a way in is what the World Investment Forum in Doha, 25–27 October, is about.

Where is the world's investment actually going? Increasingly into a few sectors — digital technology, clean energy, semiconductors, critical minerals — and a few countries.

This week in Geneva, governments are working on what the countries outside those flows can do. The conversation continues at the World Investment Forum in Doha, 25–27 October.
