At HRC62, Malta stated that violence against women and girls does not exclusively occur in conflict situations, but also in social situations including within the household. The report highlights several forms of violence against mothers. We consider the report’s references to early and forced marriage as important, shedding light specifically on violence against girls, regrettably often neglected.

We stress that responses to violence against mothers must be inclusive and responsive to the experiences of those facing intersecting forms of discrimination, including le***an mothers and other mothers in vulnerable situations.

We express our concern that the report pursues a circumscribed definition of motherhood and seeks to construct a peculiar definition. We encourage the Special Rapporteur to adopt an inclusive approach, and to refrain from including language in reporting that implies exclusion.

At , Malta took the floor in the interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender identity, Graeme Reid to commend his report on violence and discrimination experienced by ***an, , and ***r women.

We share the report's central finding: LBQ women continue to face discrimination rooted in gender and compounded by sexual orientation, across every aspect of life.

One gap remains concrete and unresolved. In many states, LBQ mothers must still adopt their own children when the biological parent is their spouse, even where same-sex relationships are legally recognised.

🇲🇹 has implemented most of the Expert's recommendations through national consultation with and legislative action, and stands ready to support the mandate.

20 years on, its work has touched millions of lives around the world. When so much multilateral effort is under strain, the things that work are worth protecting, and this is one of them.

Malta 🇲🇹 is proud to play its part, as part of Team Europe 🇪🇺
