Today, the International Day of Democracy is being observed in countries all over the world. Statistics from the Varieties of Democracy research institute show that democracy is in decline, with 74 per cent of the world’s population currently living in autocracies.

Sweden is actively working to promote democracy. Take a look at what we are doing through the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna.

🌟 Finally she is here! Our new intern - say hello to Anna Lindner! 🌟

Anna will be working with all aspects of diplomacy and Embassy tasks; for example politics, business and culture promotion in Switzerland, and communication.

Anna is in her final year at the Swedish law programme at Lund University and is working at the Embassy until the middle of January.

Do you believe in dialogue as a policing method?👮‍♀

Then you should go watch the Swedish movie “The Dialogue Police” at Cinématte Bern in Bern tomorrow on the 12th of September.

The documentary is portraying a special unit within the Swedish police that uses dialogue instead of force to protect democracy and people’s right to demonstrate and express their opinions. The film follows the unit as they deal with demonstrations, political extremism, and conflicts in society.

The film is part of this year’s Neue Schwedische Filme project, organized by the Embassy in partnership with Cinématte and with support from the Swedish Film Institute.🎥

The Embassy of Sweden was pleased to attend the Le Livre sur les Quais literary festival in Morges, one of the leading literary events in Switzerland. During the weekend, Ambassador Carl Magnus Nesser had the honour to meet Sara Stridsberg, one of Sweden’s most acclaimed contemporary authors and playwrights, who took part in two festival events. With her celebrated novels and plays translated into numerous languages, Sara Stridsberg continues to bring Swedish literature to readers and audiences around the world. New Swedish Films 2026:
As part of this year's edition of the New Swedish Films series, the Embassy, in collaboration with Cinématte Bern, the Swedish Film Institute and the Svenska institutet, is presenting 3 recent Swedish film productions and a rare film classic this year: a Swedish crime thriller from 1976.
The film series opens on 8 September with the premiere of “The Dance Club.”
With its affectionately larger-than-life characters, the film unfolds with compelling and vibrant energy. Lisa Langseth has created a story that blends rebellion, absurdity, empathy, and vulnerability with a touch of quirky humor, resulting in a work that is both deeply moving and distinctly original.
