🇫🇮 Suomen ja Sveitsin 100-vuotisia kahdenvälisiä diplomaattisuhteita juhlistavan podcast-sarjamme uusimmassa jaksossa vieraana on suomalainen yritysjohtaja Timo Ihamuotila, joka asuu ja työskentelee tällä hetkellä Sveitsissä. Ihamuotila aloitti Nokian hallituksen uutena puheenjohtajana huhtikuussa 2026.

Tässä jaksossa pureudumme talouteen – keskustelemme kansainvälisestä liiketoimintaympäristöstä, talouden ajankohtaisista kysymyksistä sekä Suomen ja Sveitsin välisistä yhtäläisyyksistä ja eroista Timo Ihamuotilan näkökulmasta.

🇬🇧 In the latest episode of our podcast series celebrating 100 years of bilateral diplomatic relations between Finland and Switzerland, our guest is Finnish business executive Timo Ihamuotila, who currently lives and works in Switzerland. Ihamuotila became the chair of the Nokia Board of Directors in April 2026.

In this episode, we take a closer look at the economy – discussing the international business environment, current economic questions, as well as the similarities and differences between Finland and Switzerland from Timo Ihamuotila’s perspective.

This weekend, Finns celebrate Juhannus, the festival of midsummer and the nightless night. Juhannus takes place around the longest day of the year, the summer solstice, when the sun doesn't set at all above the Arctic Circle in northern Finland. Even in Helsinki, on the southern coast, the sun only sets for a few hours. Modern Finnish Juhannus celebrations often include special traditions: the Juhannus sauna, a sauna whisk (vasta/vihta), a Juhannus bonfire (kokko), or in some Swedish speaking areas, a maypole (midsommarstång). Juhannus has also been a time for magic and fortune-telling, often about future marriage or love. One of the most well-known Juhannus spells says that if you pick seven different flowers and place them under your pillow on Juhannus night, you’ll dream of your future spouse.

Finland’s Comprehensive Security Model

On Wednesday, Finland partook to a joint security policy seminar organized in cooperation with the other Nordic Embassies accredited to Switzerland at the Residence of Norway in Bern.

The theme of the seminar was “Total Defence and Resilience in an Era of Military Conflict and Hybrid Themes”.

With the deteriorating security situation in the whole Europe the operational environment and activity of the Nordic countries is gaining of interest also in Switzerland.

Finnish military capabilities and emergency supply systems were presented to the audience by two leading figures both in the civilian and military branches of national defence: Mr. Janne Känkänen, Director General of the Finnish National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA) as well as Lieutenant General Jari Mikkonen, Deputy Chief of Staff of Finnish Defence Forces (Armament and Logistics). Switzerland was represented in the seminar by State Secretary Markus Mäder as keynote speaker, as well as Deputy State Secretary for Security Policy and Head of the Strategy and Cooperation Divisionat the Swiss Secretariat for Security Policy (SEPOS) Pälvi Pulli as panelist.

Ambassador Okko-Pekka Salmimies highlighted in his opening words key features of comprehensive security of Finland as follows:

“Finland’s defence system is based on the concept of comprehensive security, a deeply rooted whole-of-society approach to preparedness. It brings together civil and military authorities, the private sector, civil society, the research community, the media, and political decision-makers into a coordinated framework that safeguards the country’s vital functions.

The model has evolved over decades, with its roots in the lessons of the Second World War. Unlike many countries, Finland continued to develop its preparedness after the Cold War, resulting in a highly resilient system capable of addressing modern, complex threats.

The core objective is to ensure that society can anticipate, manage, and recover from disruptions. This is achieved by strengthening overall societal resilience and maintaining close cooperation across sectors.

Finland’s resilience rests on three main pillars: civil defence shelters that protect the population, strong security of supply ensuring access to critical resources, and credible national defence capabilities based on conscription and a trained reserve.

Underlying these pillars is psychological resilience. This is reinforced by high media literacy, strong societal trust, a collective mindset, active volunteerism, and a strong will to defend the country. Together, these factors enable Finland to maintain stability and respond effectively in times of crisis, making it one of the most resilient societies in the world.”

The Nordic Security Policy Seminar in Bern has become a tradition. This was the fourth year in a row the Nordic Embassies organized this event.

🕊️Mannerheim-muistotilaisuus järjestettiin lauantaina tuttuun tapaan Montreux'ssa Vaud'n kantonissa. C. G. E. Mannerheim vietti Montreux'n lähellä Glionin kylässä viimeiset elinvuotensa, ja nykyään Montreux'sta löytyy Mannerheimin nimikkopuisto ja muistomerkki. Tänä vuonna Mannerheimin kuolemasta tulee kuluneeksi 75 vuotta.

🪖Mannerheim syntyi Suomen Asikaisissa 4. kesäkuuta 1867 ja kuoli Sveitsin Lausannessa vuonna 1951. Hänet tunnetaan muun muassa Suomen marsalkkana ja maan kuudentena presidenttinä, joka toimi puolustusvoimain ylipäällikkönä sisällissodan (1918–1919) sekä talvi- ja jatkosodan (1939–1945) ajan. Lisäksi hän johti Suomen punaista ristiä vuosikymmenten ajan ja perusti Mannerheimin lastensuojeluliiton vuonna 1920.

🕊️La cérémonie commémorative de Mannerheim est organisée le samedi, comme d’habitude, à Montreux, dans le canton de Vaud. C. G. E. Mannerheim a passé les dernières années de sa vie dans le village de Glion, près de Montreux, et aujourd’hui, Montreux abrite un parc portant son nom ainsi qu’un monument commémoratif. Cette année marque le 75ᵉ anniversaire de la mort de Mannerheim.

🪖Mannerheim est né à Asikkala, en Finlande, le 4 juin 1867, et est décédé à Lausanne, en Suisse, en 1951. Il est notamment connu comme maréchal de Finlande et en tant que sixième président de notre pays, ayant occupé les fonctions de commandant en chef des forces armées pendant la guerre civile (1918–1919) ainsi que durant la guerre d’Hiver et la guerre de Continuation (1939–1945). En outre, Mannerheim a dirigé la Croix-Rouge finlandaise pendant des décennies et a fondé la Ligue de protection de l’enfance Mannerheim en 1920.

Perjantaina juhlistimme Puolustusvoimain lippujuhlan päivää – merkittävää hetkeä Suomen historiassa, jota vietetään marsalkka Mannerheimin syntymäpäivän kunniaksi. Yli 60 vierasta, joista moni työskentelee maanpuolustuksen parissa, kokoontui juhlimaan yhteistä arvokasta perinnettä. Tunnelmaa nosti Suomen laivaston sotilassoittokunnan sekstetti, joka toi juhlaan musiikin voimaa. Kiitämme lämpimästi Finnairia, Hätälä Oy:tä, vieraitamme sekä laivaston sekstettiä – yhdessä loimme unohtumattoman juhlan! 🇫🇮🛡️🎺

Vendredi, nous avons célébré la Journée du drapeau des Forces de défense – un moment fort de l’histoire finlandaise, honorant l’anniversaire du maréchal Mannerheim. Plus de 60 invités, dont beaucoup œuvrent pour la défense nationale, se sont réunis pour partager cette tradition précieuse. L’ambiance a été sublimée par un sextuor de musiciens de l’orchestre naval finlandais. Un grand merci à Finnair, Hätälä Oy, nos invités et le sextuor de la marine – ensemble, nous avons créé une réception mémorable ! 🇫🇮🛡️🎺

Am Freitag feierten wir den Flaggentag der Verteidigungskräfte – einen bedeutenden Moment in der finnischen Geschichte zu Ehren von Marschall Mannerheim. Über 60 Gäste, viele aus dem Bereich der Landesverteidigung, kamen zusammen, um diese wertvolle Tradition zu würdigen. Das Marine-Sextett der finnischen Streitkräfte sorgte für musikalische Highlights. ✨ A voice from Finland, echoing into eternity ✨
Tonight in Bern, music becomes memory, farewell, and legacy. On June 4th and 5th, 2026, at Casino Bern, the Berner Symphonieorchester presents Bruckners Vermächtnis wit the Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen and Finnish trumpetist Verneri Pohjola — a program that brings together two profound final statements in music history. At its heart: Kaija Saariaho’s HUSH, her last completed work. Saariaho (1952–2023), whose one of the most influential composers of our time, was known for her luminous sound world, blending orchestral color and deeply human expression.

HUSH (2023) is more than a concerto — it is a farewell. Written during the final stages of her illness, the trumpet concerto unfolds across four movements, tracing a journey through breath, silence, dreams, and memory. Saariaho herself described it as leaving “an imprint into the silence.”
🎺 In Bern, the work receives its Swiss premiere, performed by the very soloist it was written for, Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, under conductor Eva Ollikainen.
🌌 Paired with Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony, another unfinished testament, the evening becomes a meditation on endings — and what remains.

A rare moment where past and present meet:
two composers, centuries apart, each facing the infinite and answering with music.

In his address after Saariaho's touching piece, the soloist Pohjola brought up the 100 years of diplomatic relations between Finland and Switzerland, relevant to the concert showcasing the talents of both Finnish and Swiss mucisians.
