Ever wondered how to write like the Irish monks and scribes of the early Middle Ages? 📖✒️

Historian and master calligrapher Tim O’Neill has written 'Irish Calligraphy', a step-by-step guide to the art of Ireland’s famous manuscript tradition. The beautiful book has now been translated into German and will be published by Haupt Verlag.

Highlighting the deep historical links between Ireland and Switzerland, the book also tells the story of Monegal, a young Irishman who became a renowned teacher and scribe at the Monastery of St Gallen in the 9th century, with the Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen today home to one of Europe’s most important manuscript collections.

Join us for the book launch in Bern in two weeks’ time, on 9 September.

On 13 August, the Embassy was proud to support a screening of ‘I Call Him by His Name’ by filmmaker Alice Doyard with Irish journalist Fergal Keane on the closing night of Filmfest Liechtenstein 2026. The film tells the harrowing story of those killed in the Bucha massacre of 2022.

Ambassador McGarry, in her opening remarks, reaffirmed Ireland’s ongoing support for Ukraine, and the central place Ukraine holds in our priorities for the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Following the screening, Ambassador of Ukraine to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Iryna Venediktova, and Liechtenstein’s Ambassador to the UN, Christian Wenaweser, as well as Doyard and Keane, shared their perspectives on the war, its real human impact, and on the role small countries can have in calling for aggressors to be held to account.
