AIYEDATIWA LAUNCHES STATEWIDE LIVESTOCK VACCINATION AGAINST DISEASES OUTBREAKS, TARGETS FOOD SECURITY.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has flagged off the Ondo Statewide Livestock Vaccination Campaign against major animal diseases, reaffirming his administration's commitment to strengthening food security, improving livestock productivity and protecting the investments of farmers across the state.

The vaccination exercise, implemented by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, a world Bank assisted initiative under the Ondo State Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, targets major livestock diseases, including Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and Newcastle Disease, while providing free vaccination for sheep, goats, cattle and poultry.

Represented at the ceremony in Akure by his Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the exercise as a landmark intervention in the state's drive to build a resilient livestock industry and ensure the availability of safe, wholesome animal protein for residents.

He noted that livestock production remains a key component of Ondo State's agricultural transformation agenda but lamented that recurring transboundary animal diseases continue to threaten farmers' livelihoods, public health and economic growth.

According to the governor, diseases such as CBPP, Foot and Mouth Disease and Newcastle Disease have caused enormous losses through reduced productivity, high mortality rates, increased production costs and trade restrictions.

He said the statewide vaccination campaign demonstrates the government's resolve to tackle the challenge through coordinated disease surveillance and preventive vaccination.

"By protecting our cattle and poultry populations, we are safeguarding the livelihoods of thousands of livestock farmers while ensuring the availability of safe and wholesome animal protein for our citizens," he said.

Aiyedatiwa commended the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, L-PRES, development partners and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative, noting that the state had continued to record significant achievements under the L-PRES Project.

He listed some of the interventions to include the construction of modern abattoirs, establishment of artificial insemination centres, rehabilitation of veterinary clinics, development of livestock facilities, provision of solar-powered boreholes in livestock settlements, distribution of motorcycles to extension officers and supply of fodder processing equipment to livestock farmers.

The Governor urged livestock owners, pastoralists and poultry farmers to present all eligible animals for vaccination, stressing that prevention remains the most effective and economical strategy for controlling livestock diseases.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr. Leye Akinola, described the vaccination exercise as a strategic intervention aimed at preventing disease outbreaks, increasing livestock productivity and strengthening the resilience of livestock farmers.

He said the programme demonstrates the commitment of the Aiyedatiwa administration to protecting investments in the livestock sector while safeguarding public health.

Akinola explained that the exercise was being carried out through L-PRES, the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, development partners, livestock associations and other stakeholders.

He urged livestock farmers, herders, poultry farmers and community leaders to take full advantage of the free vaccination exercise by making their animals available.

"Disease prevention remains far more effective and economical than disease treatment and control. This vaccination is free of charge. Make your herds available so they can be vaccinated. It is to protect your investments while also protecting the lives of the people who consume these animals," he said.

The commissioner also charged veterinary officers, extension agents and field personnel to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, diligence and integrity, saying their commitment was critical to the success of the programme.

"As we flag off this exercise today, let us reaffirm our collective commitment to building a healthy, productive and prosperous livestock industry that will contribute meaningfully to the economic development and food security of Ondo State," he added.

Stakeholders at the event unanimously welcomed the initiative, describing it as a major boost for livestock production and animal health in the state.

Chairman of the Sheep and Goat Association, Mr. Adeleye, thanked Governor Aiyedatiwa for partnering with L-PRES, saying the intervention would greatly benefit livestock farmers and improve their businesses. He appealed to the project implementation team to continue involving livestock associations in future programmes.

Representative of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Ondo State chapter, Mr. Olawande Fadipe, said the vaccination exercise would help prevent disease outbreaks in poultry farms and expressed confidence in the quality of the vaccines supplied by the government.

Similarly, the representative of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Alhaji Abdullahi Mohammed, commended the governor and veterinary personnel for consistently providing vaccination services to cattle settlements, particularly in Iju-Itaogbolu.

Director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. Oloruntoba Olodun said the partnership between the state government and L-PRES had significantly strengthened veterinary services, making it possible to vaccinate thousands of animals against epidemic diseases affecting cattle, sheep, goats and poultry.

He noted that the intervention would reduce animal mortality, increase livestock productivity and improve the supply of animal protein to residents, while calling for sustained investment in veterinary infrastructure and disease prevention programmes.

Other stakeholders described the timing of the vaccination campaign as appropriate for boosting livestock immunity, while several livestock farmers expressed gratitude to the government, recalling that disease outbreaks had previously resulted in heavy financial losses.

They also applauded recent agricultural interventions by the Aiyedatiwa administration, including fertiliser distribution and support for extension services, expressing optimism that sustained vaccination campaigns would protect farmers' investments, improve public health and position Ondo State as a leading livestock production hub in Nigeria.

ONDO GOVERNMENT TO KICKSTART ANIMAL VACCINATION

The Ondo state government through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project is set to begin vaccination of cattle, poultry, sheep and goat, against trans- boundary diseases such as Contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia (CBPP), Newcastle Disease, and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

The development followed the release of fund under the partnership programme with the Federal Government, to cater for the statewide exercise which begun on Thursday with training of inoculators in Akure and ongoing engagement of stakeholders in the state.

At the training of the inoculators, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr. Leye Akinola, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Agriculture Sector in the Ministry, Mrs. Foluke Tunde-Daramola, appreciated the Federal Government and the State Governor, His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for their continuous support for L-PRES Project since inception, noting that the exercise would go a long way in protecting public health..

The Commissioner also commended the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association for its support during the anthrax vaccination campaign in the state last year, which he stressed that it recorded significant success and urged the Association to replicate the same level of commitment to produce same results for the new animal vaccination.

Earlier in his remarks, the Ondo State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Olufemi Adeogun, appreciated the L-PRES National Coordination Office for providing the vaccines for the use of the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT, and also praised the Ondo State Government for providing all the necessary support to ensure the success of the exercise.

The resource persons at the training were Professor Samuel Adebayo Oluwadare of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), and Dr. Adegboyega Obadua of the Department of Veterinary Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, who charged participants to adhere to safety measures and apply proper techniques in administering vaccines to animals.

The resource persons also underscored the importance of accurate and timely data reporting of the vaccinated animals for record purposes.

Trainees included private and government veterinary practitioners, para-vet and record keepers.

The vaccination is expected to take-off at the conclusion of the ongoing stakeholders' engagement and the flag-off ceremony proposed for next week.

..As Ondo govt pledges support for smooth project implementation.

The officials of the World Bank, Federal Government and the National Coordination Office of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, have engaged the staff of the Project in Ondo, Ekiti and Edo states on the project's implementation level in their respective states.

The 5-day event which took place at BON Royal Parkley Hotel in Akure, was tagged Mid-Term Review (MTR) Mission, a pivotal monitoring and evaluation activity of the World Bank for successful project implementation across the country.

Engaging the team, the World Bank Procurement Specialist, Mr Tijani Abdulgarfar, explained that the exercise was important to review the states' activities ahead of the Project's Mid-Term-Review (MTR), which immediately follows the mission exercise, in Lagos.

He pointed out that the states must report their financial status, challenges, recommendations and achievements, which must align with the project's objectives and the key performance indicators, as spelt out in the Project's manuals.

According to him, the project has reached a critical stage where reports of every implementing state are carefully assessed to adjudge their performance and define the future of the project.

Mr Tijani together with other team members who also examined each state reports as presented by their monitoring and evaluation officers, and supported by their State Project Coordinators, gave their constructive criticism for better presentation and acceptability.

In their seperate reports, Ondo, Ekiti and Edo states L-PRES Project, enumerated different capacity buildings for farmers, distribution of motorcycles to extension agents, construction of veterinary hospitals, livestock markets, artificial insemination centres, as key projects carried out in their respective states.

Other achievements highlighted were distribution of fodder choppers to cluster farmers, vaccination of livestock against anthrax, CBPP, FMD and newcastle diseases, reports and resolution of farmer-herder crises among others.

Key activity during the mission was a visitation to selected project sites in the hosting state, for first hand information, review and guidance.

Location visited included ongoing Artificial Insemination Centre, Cold Chain facility for the storage of vaccines, Provision of 50, 000 litres of water point for Adofure and Oyemekun pig farmers clusters respectively, provision of 200kva generator and 40kva solar facility to power equipment and facilities at semi-mechanised abattoir- all in Akure, the state capital.

Participating in the mission were World Bank Operation Analyst, Mr Babajide Akanji, Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst, Dr Ayo Fashogbon; L-PRES National Value Chains Specialist, Princess Ronke Healther-Akanni; L-PRES National Procurememt Specialist, Mr Kunle Adeoye; L-PRES National Animal Husbandry Officer 2, Ijeoma Nzekwe; Development Bank Of Nigeria (DBN) representatives, Christian Nwuzor and Oluwafemi Ola.

Meanwhile, the Ondo state government has reiterated its commitment to the smooth implementation of L-PRES Project in the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr 'Leye Akinola gave the assurance during a courtesy visit paid on him, by the MTR mission team, in his office, in Akure.

The Commissioner who explained that livestock development is central to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa led- administration in the state, as encapsulates in his OUR EASE agenda, stressed that the state was making frantic effort to introduce ranching system to estimated 5 million cattle in the state in order to address insecuruty challenges.

While appreciating President Bola Tinubu for the L-PRES Project initiative, he sought the collaboration of the federal munistry of livestock development to actualise its plans for the livestock develooment.

The commissioner promised that the state would address the minor impediments to the project smooth implementation and would continue to judiciously utilise the project fund for desirable results.

Earlier Engr Tijani Garfar had appreciated the state for the implementation of the L-PRES project, but highlighted delay implementation of projects due to additional multiple layers of approval, which could lead to appropriate sanctions such as reallocation of the fund to another state.

The Mission ended with a wrap up discussion moderated by the Bank Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst, Dr Ayo Fashogbon and Operation Analyst, Mr Babajide Akanni, where key discoveries were analysed and findings to be reviewed at the Mid Term Review (MTR) exercise in Lagos.

AIYEDATIWA BOOSTS FOOD SECURITY, DISTRIBUTES 70 MOTORCYCLES TO FARMERS.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has distributed no fewer than 70 motorcycles to livestock extension officers and lead farmers to enhance agricultural productivity and improve food security in the state.

The initiative, carried out in Akure, in partnership with the Livestock Productivity Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), is aimed at strengthening extension service delivery and boosting livestock production across rural communities.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Segun Omojuwa, the governor said the initiative was aimed at strengthening service delivery, improving food security, and boosting agricultural output across the state.

Aiyedatiwa described agriculture as the backbone of the state’s economy, noting that its growth depends largely on effective support systems, particularly agricultural extension services that connect government policies with grassroots farmers.

He said mobility challenges had, over time, hindered extension officers from accessing farmers in remote communities, adding that the motorcycles would help bridge the gap and improve productivity.

“These motorcycles will enable officers to reach more communities, respond promptly to field challenges, and provide timely technical guidance on modern farming practices and livestock management,” he said.

The governor added that the initiative aligns with his administration’s plan to transition farmers from subsistence to commercial agriculture, while also encouraging youth participation in the sector.

He commended L-PRES and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for strengthening agricultural value chains in the state and warned beneficiaries against using the motorcycles for personal or commercial purposes.

“The success of this programme depends largely on your dedication and proper utilisation of the equipment,” he added.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr Leye Akinola, described the distribution as a major milestone in improving livestock production and enhancing farmers’ resilience.

He noted that the motorcycles would address long-standing transportation challenges faced by extension officers, especially in rural areas with difficult terrain.

“The lack of transportation has limited regular engagement with farmers, thereby weakening the impact of government agricultural programmes,” Akinola said.

According to him, the motorcycles would serve as instruments of transformation by enabling extension agents to reach remote communities more efficiently and deliver modern livestock practices.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Foluke Tunde-Daramola, urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the motorcycles.

In his remarks, a livestock extension agent, Mr Adelana Adebusoye, who spoke on behalf of beneficiaries, commended the state government, saying the gesture would significantly improve service delivery.

Similarly, the L-PRES State Project Coordinator, Mr Olufemi Adeogun, lauded the governor for his continued support towards the successful implementation of the programme in the state.

FARMER-HERDER CRISIS: ONDO L-PRES MOVES TO RESOLVE INCIDENT IN IGBARA-OKE

In an attempt to intervene in a farmer-herder crisis in Ondo state, the State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, has responded to the calls of some farmers, alleging cattle invasion of their farms.

The group of farmers whose farmlands are located in the Owens River Basin land, in Igbara-Oke, the headquarters of Ifedore local government of the state, had made a call for L-PRES intervention in the matter.

Arriving the farmlands, the farmers numbering about 10 complained to the L-PRES team that they had been experiencing herders invasion of their farmland, day and nights, destroying their farms and crops.

One of the spokespersons, Mr Joe Abi said all efforts to stops the herders had proven abortive, explaining that the situation had degenerated into attempts to kill one of them, stressing that they were already in fear of kidnapping in the area.

They identified an herder nicknamed yellow as arrow head of the marauders who has consistently turned a deaf ears to their warning against the invasion.

While expressing frustration over the development, they warned that if the situation was not curtailed, they would have no option than to abandoned farming, as many of them are already skeptical of investing in farming.

Responding, the L-PRES team led by the Social Safeguard Officer, Mrs Florence Salau appealed to the farmers to exercise patience, as the team had already contacted the leader of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeder Association in the state, who had promised to intervene.

The team also expressed sadness over the inability of the herders to show up for the meeting as they were invited to attend the meeting with the farmers to profer a lasting solution to the crisis.

The L-PRES team, however, promised to intensify effort at ensuring that the herders show up for a reschedule meeting, in an attempt to permanently resolve the crisis.

Other members of the L-PRES team who visited the scene were: Animal. Health Officer, Dr Taiwo Adigun; Animal Husbandry Officer, Mr Olusegun Alajo; Communication/ICT Officer, Mr Augustine Adeoye; Environmental Safeguard Officer, Mr Mayowa Abiloro.

FARMER FIELD SCHOOL: ONDO L-PRES GRADUATES 1000 BENEFICIARIES
..equip them with modern farming techniques and basic tools.

The Ondo State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L—PRES) Project has trained no fewer than 1,000 livestock farmers on modern farming techniques and record keeping for increased livestock production in the state.

The L-PRES project Coordinator, Mr Olufemi Adeogun, disclosed this at the first graduation ceremony of the L—PRES Farmers’ Field School (FFS) held in Akure.

Mr Adeogun said the beneficiaries spread across the 18 local governments of the state, underwent six months free training in the three value chains of poultry; sheep and goat; and pig, including processors. .

The SPC explained that the training and skills gained at the FFS would enable the farmers work together and transform livestock farming into a more productive, profitable and climate-resilient sector.

He said there is a global departure from crude ways of agricultural practices hence the need to train the farmers on modern technology practices

The SPC used the medium to highlight various intervention of the World Bank assisted project in the state, which included, ongoing construction of artificial insemination centres, construction of veterinary hospitals, cold chains facility, livestock markets, hatchery and bio-digester, noting that before the expiration of the six- year intervention, the project would have transformed the livestock sector of the state.

He appreciated the government of Ondo state under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for ensuring that the state is among the 20 implementating states of the federation, by prompt approval of its counterpart fund.

Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr. Leye Akinola,, congratulated the beneficiaries for their commitment and willingness to learn, and urged them to share the knowledge and skills acquired with other farmers.

Engr Akinola who was represented by the Director of Animal Husbandry Services' Department in the Ministry, Mr Foluso Ojo urged them to be good ambassadors of modern agricultural practices within their communities.

He reiterated the commitment of the state government under the Governor, Dr Lucky Aiyedagiwa, to continually collaborate with development partners such as L-PRES to ensure that farmers across the state have access to training, improved technologies, inputs and market opportunities.

In their goodwill messages, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr Laolu Akindolire who was represented by the Ministry's Director of Technical Assistance and Aid Coordination, Mr Abiola Olumide and the representative of the Project Manager of ADP, Mr Kayode Adekunle, felicitated with the L-PRES project and charged the beneficiaries not to see the knowledge garnered as mere academic exercises.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Engr. Abiodun Fasoro, a pig farmer, appreciated the project for the support and knowledge, saying it would improve productions in the state.

Basic tools and certificates were given to all the farmers as incentives to support them.

ONDO L-PRES TRAINS 100 LIVESTOCK LEAD FARMERS ON FODDER PRODUCTION

The Ondo State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L—PRES) Project has trained 100 livestock farmers on fodder production to increase productivity and enhance commercialisation in the state.

The State Project Coordinator (SPC) of Ondo L-PRES, Mr Olufemi Adeogun, disclosed this at the opening ceremony of a a six-day capacity building programme organised by the project in the state for the livestock farmers across the state.

The capacity building which began in Ilara-Mokin, the headquarters of Ifedore Local Government of the state, for beneficiaries at the central senatoeial district of the state, had the theme, ‘Capacity building on fodder production and value addition, including sustainable hydroponic fodder production and crop residue treatment and utilisation for sustainable livestock production across the state’.

Adeogun, who said the 100 trainees were selected from the three senatorial districts of the state as lead farmers to retrain others, explained that each senatorial district would be undergoing training for two days in each of the three senatorial districts of the state.

The SPC explained that the training aligned with the broader objectives of L-PRES to enhance livestock productivity, strengthen resilience to climate shocks, promote value addition, and improve rural incomes.

“This training focuses on improving feed availability and quality through fodder establishment, conservation techniques such as hay and silage production, and safe crop residue treatment.

“This intervention is both strategic and timely for the development of the livestock sector in Ondo State.

“Our livestock farmers continue to face persistent challenges, particularly seasonal feed shortages, rising costs of commercial feed, under-utilisation of crop residues, and increasing climate variability.

“These constraints significantly affect productivity, profitability and resilience across our agro pastoral communities,” Adeogun said.

He, therefore, admonished the trainees to serve as knowledge multipliers, adopt the techniques demonstrated and establish practical examples in their communities.

“These are proven, low-cost technologies that farmers can adopt immediately to stabilise feed supply throughout the year.

“L-PRES will continue to support monitoring, extension linkages, and scaling of successful practices to transforming livestock production in Ondo State,” he said.

While declaring the training open, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Engr 'Leye Akinola, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Foluke Tunde-Daramola, commended L-PRES for supporting the livestock farmers in ensuring reliable feed supply throughout the year.

Engineer Akinola, disclosed that the training would address the challenges facing livestock farmers and help them adopt and increase the quantity and quality of livestock feed in the state.

“This training will help reduce the seasonal feed shortage, poor feed quality, and under-utilisation of crop residues continue to limit livestock productivity and farmers incomes.

“As a ministry, we are committed to strengthening extension services, promoting farmer group organisation, and facilitating access to input and markets.

“We will continue to work with partners to scale successful practices across the state,” he said.

In their goodwill messages, the State Chairman, Pig Farmers Association, Mrs Mercy Williams and the State Vice Chairman, Sheep and Goat Farmers Association, Prof. Josiah Babatola applauded L-PRES for the training, stating that the initiative would go a long way in addressing the challenges encountered by livestock farmers and also increase their production in the state.

The lead facilitator for the training, Program, A. N Fajemisin together with other resource persons did justice to the theme of the capacity building which was also carried out in Owo, the headquarters of Owo local government for beneficiaries in the northern senatorial district and Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo local government for the beneficiaries in the southern senatoeial district, and the beneficiaries were also taken through practical sessions throughout the periods.

ONDO L-PRES PROJECT GETS TRADITIONAL RULERS SUPPORT

The common asset intervention of the Ondo State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, has received a significant boost, from foremost traditional rulers in the state.

The support were given during stakeholder's engagement exercises on site selection and sensitization on the project, held at each of the proposed project community by the Project Implementation Unit (PIU).

During the engagement at the palace of a foremost traditional ruler and Olubaka of Oka, the monarch , Oba Yusuf Adeleye, assured the L-PRES team of allocating a four plots of land for the establishment of the proposed livestock market in the ancient community.

The monarch who despite his busy schedules during the engagement, patiently listened to the L-PRES team and instructed his relevant chiefs to ensure that maximum support is given towards the success of the project's implementation in the community.

Similarly, the team was well received by the people of Epinmi land who expressed their joy with the announcement of the establishment of livestock market in the community.

Speaking, the Gbirimojo of Epinmi land, Oba Femi Idris appreciated the Bank, the Federal and the State Government for the proposed project and promised to provide the security and support needed to actualize the project in record time.

During the stakeholders engagement in Oba Akoko, the Reagent of the land, Princess Ronke Adegoroye, together with the chiefs and the people of the land, expressed their readiness to give maximum support for the project ex*****on.

The Reagent, however, sought more intervention project for the community to further help boost livestock development in the community.

In Igbokoda, the Akokoniko Apaonimaje, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, expressed joy over the proposed livestock market in the community, which he said was the first of its kind in the community

Oba Afolabi noted that a predominant number of residents eat livestock meats, despite the fact that the area are majorly known for fish farming.

He said that despite the land availability challenges in the community, he would provide six plots of land for the project, in which the extra two land would be used for crop markets to complement the livestock market.

In the same vein, the people of Ifon, the headquarters of Ose local government came out in their good number to welcome the team to the area.

They expressed happiness towards the proposed livestock market in the area, which was in addition to the ongoing construction of slaughter's slab in the community.

Speaking during the engagemnts, the State Project Coordinator for Ondo L-PRES, Mr Olufemi Adeogun who was represented by the Social Safeguard Officer of the project, Mrs Florence Salau, announced the proposed project for each community and stated that the community engagement was necessary to get the support of the stakeholders.

He sought for suitable land for the project, which must be an accessible four plots of land, approximately.

According to him, upon completion, the project would be handed over to the community for sustainability, adding tht L-PRES project is a six-year World Bank assisted intervention to improve livestock productivity, resilience a d comercialisation in the state.

He enumerated the construction of veterinary hospitals, slaughter slabs, hatchery, artificial insemination centers, cold chains facility, as part of the Project's common asset interventions across the state.

Present at the events were the the heads of market women, livestock farmers, youth, butchers, traditional rulers and L-PRES Project Implementation Unit (PIU) and support staff.
