Desuung – Guardians of Peace

Desuup Sangay, a member of the 71st Batch (2025) from Gyalpozhing, is currently serving under the Nationwide River Cleaning Initiative. He is leading the Thimphu volunteer team and has successfully cleaned eight streams, along with the Wangchu River stretch from Cheri Base to Chunzom.

Sangay and his team will continue their dedicated efforts for one year, focusing on cleaning the Wangchu River and streams across Thimphu Dzongkhag.

Thank you, Sangay, for your inspiration and unwavering commitment—truly embodying the spirit of service in uniform.

Even before joining the Desuung programme, Sangay had already initiated voluntary service by cutting grass in public areas, monasteries, and along roadsides, earning the name “Grasscutter Sangay.” He continues to inspire others through this humble yet impactful initiative.

𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭

On 16th April, the Interim Workshop for the Solid Waste Management Capacity Development Advisory Project was held, led by the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC), Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Participants included Mr. Yoichiro Kimata, Chief Representative of JICA Bhutan Office, Mr. Ugyen Dorji, Thrompon (Mayor) of Thimphu Thromde—who participated site visits on solid waste management in Japan in February 2026 under this project—as well as central government officials, local government officials, and representatives from the private sector.

Through the workshop, participants developed a shared understanding of the importance of ensuring consistency between the Waste Management Roadmap and the revised National Waste Management Strategy, which is expected to be finalized soon. The workshop also emphasized the need to apply key lessons learned from the Japan Study Tour to Bhutan’s context and to strengthen collaboration among central government agencies, local governments, the private sector, and development partners.

DECC and JICA will continue to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to advance sustainable and effective waste management practices in Bhutan. Www.grasscuttersangay.com Grasscutter Sangay

There is a unique kind of joy that comes from quiet, honest labor—not asking what we can get, but what we can give (zhabtog) for our Tsa-Wa-Sum (King, Country, and People). Known locally on the ground as "Grasscutter Sangay," I am proud to spend my days doing free community grass-cutting and area maintenance services across our public spaces, roadsides, and sacred monastery grounds.To clear the overgrown paths, tidy up the sacred spaces where we offer our prayers, and prepare the green layouts for our community is more than just manual work; it is an act of mindfulness and a small brick laid toward building our collective future. Every sweep of the blade and every cleared pathway reflects our shared responsibility to keep our surroundings clean, serene, and welcoming for everyone.Let us continue to rise together, near or far, and serve with a sincere heart. Proud to be a humble part of this historic national journey! 🙏✨
