Computer geeks Tang Jie and Yang Zhilin were mere teacher and pupil more than a decade ago, with dreams of building a machine that could think like a human.

Today, they are two of the Chinese artificial-intelligence tycoons who have U.S. AI pioneers looking over their shoulders with alarm.

Tang, a professor at Tsinghua University, co-founded Z.AI, one of the companies hot on the heels of Anthropic and OpenAI in capability and global usage.

Yang, whom Tang once nominated for his university’s top academic award, leads another, Moonshot AI.

Each company is valued at tens of billions of dollars.

The rapid rise of Chinese AI models has sparked a host of questions in both Silicon Valley and Washington. How did Chinese AI labs get so far so fast? Where did their AI models come from?

Are companies like Tang’s and Yang’s stealing from U.S. models, and should their products be banned to protect American national security?

A university lab nurtured the computer scientists who are using ingenuity and imitation to chase down Anthropic and OpenAI. “They know perfectly how to monetize their work.”

Heart Aerospace made history after its full-scale electric aircraft, the X1, completed a 27-minute test flight consuming just 5 US dollars in electricity. The 25,000-pound demonstrator reached 1,100 feet in New York, proving battery-powered technology can scale to commercial-sized regional planes.

Swedish-founded, US-based startup Heart Aerospace has completed a major breakthrough in green aviation with the successful maiden flight of its full-scale demonstrator, the X1.
Taking off from Plattsburgh International Airport in upstate New York, the 25,000-pound aircraft flew for 27 minutes on battery power alone, reaching an altitude of 1,100 feet. Despite its massive size—featuring a 106-foot wingspan and four wing-mounted electric motors delivering over one megawatt of power—the flight consumed approximately 5 US dollars (around 500 NPR) worth of electricity.
While the $5 energy spend highlights incredible fuel efficiency compared to surging jet fuel costs, industry experts note it won't translate to dirt-cheap airline tickets immediately. Overall operational costs still include pilot salaries, fleet maintenance, airport fees, insurance, and battery degradation.
Nevertheless, as the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown, the X1 serves as a crucial technology proving ground. Heart Aerospace plans to leverage these real-world flight metrics to build its commercial ES-30, a 30-passenger hybrid-electric regional airliner designed to lower airline operating expenses and cut aviation emissions.

China has developed a star-based navigation system designed to guide hypersonic vehicles when GPS, BeiDou and other satellite signals are jammed or unavailable.

The system uses stars as fixed reference points, but extreme heat and radiation around hypersonic vehicles can distort starlight and disrupt sensors.

Researchers developed radiation models and a specialised star sensor to overcome these challenges during high-speed flight.

The prototype achieved over 99% star-pattern recognition without interference and above 80% under severe aerodynamic interference, with accuracy better than 5 arcseconds.

The system could provide hypersonic weapons with a backup navigation method during electronic warfare, reducing reliance on satellite signals.

3 headlines dropped this week. Most people read them separately. That was the mistake.
Headline 1. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan and the most powerful banker on Earth, went on TV and told the White House to finish the Iran war and finish it right. He said Iran has had its throat on the Strait of Hormuz for 45 years.
Headline 2. Bank of America reported that America now holds just 43 days of crude oil supply. The normal buffer is 65 days. This is the lowest level since 1983, and it is why 172 million barrels are being drained from the emergency reserve.
Headline 3. Lloyd's List confirmed that ships crossing Hormuz are now paying transit tolls in yuan, not dollars. That has not happened in 50 years.
Read together, these are not war updates. They are stress fractures in a deal that has held since the 1970s. America guards the sea lanes, and in return the world prices oil in dollars and parks the profits in America. Remove the guard, and the rent stops.
Economies do not collapse overnight. Trust does.

Researchers have developed a revolutionary metallic alloy that is reportedly up to ten times stronger than conventional structural steel while remaining remarkably flexible and resistant to cracking. Unlike many ultra-strong materials that become brittle under stress, the new alloy combines exceptional strength with high ductility, allowing it to absorb impacts without catastrophic failure.

Scientists believe the material could transform industries including aviation, aerospace, bridges, automobiles, offshore structures, and defense, reducing weight while significantly improving durability. If commercialized at scale, it could help build lighter aircraft, longer-lasting bridges, and more fuel-efficient transportation systems.

China has launched the next phase of what has been described as the world’s largest afforestation project.
The Taklamakan Desert is already surrounded by a 3,046-kilometer green belt — the longest of its kind in the world.
But the first barrier was not enough. As local experts put it, a “green scarf” alone cannot stop the shifting sand.
Now, China is reinforcing the desert’s edges through a three-part strategy: widening the green belt, strengthening vulnerable sections, and finding sustainable ways to use desert resources.
The project is also bringing water, electricity and roads into remote areas. Large solar farms power more than 30 water-pumping systems, supplying drip irrigation for newly planted vegetation.
The result: tree survival rates have risen above 80%, while annual electricity costs have been reduced by more than 3 million yuan.
This is no longer just about stopping sand. It is about rebuilding fragile ecosystems and protecting the communities living along the desert’s edge.
Behind every kilometer of green are people who have spent years planting into the wind.
