Building resilient communities means ensuring that people have access not only to livelihoods and nutritious food, but also to social protection when they need it.
As part of a joint initiative in Covalima, farmers group had the opportunity to learn more about Timor-Leste’s Contributory Social Security Scheme, particularly the voluntary contributory scheme.
The session was delivered by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO), providing participants with practical information on social security contributions, participation and the benefits available through the scheme.
The voluntary scheme is particularly relevant for workers in informal economy who are not covered by mandatory social security arrangements. By bringing information directly to farmers in the community, the initiative aims to strengthen understanding and encourage them to consider social security as part of planning for their future and protecting their families.
The social security activities form part of a broader initiative linking sustainable agriculture, school feeding and nutrition. Together, these efforts demonstrate how stronger livelihoods and stronger social protection can contribute to healthier and more resilient communities.
The initiative brings together the Government of Timor-Leste, farmers’ groups, local communities and development partners, including INSS, ILO, the European Union, WFP and UNICEF, working together to support more inclusive and resilient communities.
The activities are supported through the Strengthening Social Security and Nutrition Project, funded by the European Union.
