A note from Lee Miller (nee Annis) regarding the history of the hatchery.

The hatchery was a federal operation. A sign by the road read”Dominion Government Fish Hatchery”. It’s mission was to raise trout and release them in lakes and rivers to provide increased angling success for tourists and sports fishermen.
The idea was that small fish so planted could grow and reproduce naturally and replenish the stock. But also it seems some fish of larger size were also planted. To accomplish this the hatchery had a population of adult fish to provide the new generation each year.
This operation was popular with the public and the Hatchery was a minor tourist attraction. Individual sportsmen and tour groups came to view the operation. Babe Ruth who was an enthusiastic fisherman once came and he signed the Hatcherys guest book! The Sportsman’s Show in Boston featured Maritime sports opportunities and tanks of hatchery fish were a feature there along with athletic shows by locally famous guides . The show ran for years between the wars . My grandfather Ben Annis was one of the officials of the Nova Scotia Guides Assocition.
