Cape Forchu Lighthouse

Cape Forchu Lighthouse One of Nova Scotia's most photographed lighthouses. Opening Day: May 16th, 2026

May & June: Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm
Beginning June 21st

The Leif Erikson Trail and lighthouse grounds are open 24/7 year-round to walk and enjoy the observation decks. This spectacular and unique "apple core" lighthouse is the second most photographed lighthouse in Nova Scotia and located just 10 minutes outside the Town of Yarmouth. The Cape has been welcoming visitors since 1604, when Samuel de Champlain landed and named the area "Cap Forchu," meanin

g "forked tongue of land." Towering over the jagged coastline since 1839, the Cape Forchu Light welcomes people to the region and beckons them to shore. With crashing waves and sprawling skies, it's no wonder Cape Forchu was voted one of the best public spaces in Canada. When visiting be sure to explore our small but informative museum and browse the gift shop located inside the former Lightkeeper's dwelling. Take a walk along the Leif Erikson Park & Trail and explore the rugged landscape while taking in breathtaking views, stunning sunsets and spectacular dark skies stargazing.

With the Cape Forchu Lighthouse lantern room getting a fresh coat (or three!) of paint, it got us thinking about the stories this place could tell.

Did you know there was a school here as early as 1807? Local families built it themselves, using whatever materials they had on hand. It was just a small one-room schoolhouse, but it meant everything to a community that truly valued learning.

Over the years, things weren’t always easy—low enrollment and a shortage of teachers made keeping the school going a challenge. But in 1909, the community pulled together once again to build a new school that served both Cape Forchu and Stanwood’s Beach. That school stayed part of daily life here until the 1950s.

It’s pretty incredible to think about the generations who passed through those doors.

If you’d like to learn more, the full article—researched and written by Mike Cunningham—is shared in the photos.
