June marks National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.
For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples have lived throughout the lands now known as Canada, developing rich cultures, languages, traditions, and systems of knowledge that continue to influence and enrich communities today. National Indigenous History Month provides an opportunity to learn more about these histories and to acknowledge the lasting contributions Indigenous peoples have made and continue to make to our country, province, and region.
This month also encourages reflection on the importance of learning from Indigenous perspectives and experiences. By increasing our understanding of Indigenous history and culture, we help build stronger relationships based on respect, awareness, and appreciation.
On June 21, communities across the country will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day. Held on the summer solstice, a day of significance for many Indigenous peoples, it is an opportunity to honour the diversity, strength, and vitality of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures.
The Town of Yarmouth encourages residents to take time throughout June to explore Indigenous history, support Indigenous voices, and participate in opportunities to learn about the cultures, traditions, and stories that continue to enrich our communities.
National Indigenous History Month is an opportunity to celebrate the enduring contributions of Indigenous peoples and to deepen our understanding of the histories and cultures that are an important part of Canada’s past, present, and future.
