A great start to the People’s Climate Mandate. Thank you to the media who came out, you can see and read their stories on local websites. Many groups that participated in creating the mandate were there with banners.

The final mandate covers 10 broad policy priorities for the city:

1. Fund the updated Winnipeg Climate Action Plan.
2. Increase participation and accountability in the city budget process.
3. Protect residents from extreme heat.
4. Plan for sustainable growth and liveable, connected neighbourhoods where we can bus, bike, and walk.
5. Ensure transit service is reliable, frequent, and efficient.
6. Accelerate the completion of the cycling and pedestrian network.
7. Accelerate energy efficiency and clean energy use in buildings across Winnipeg.
8. Protect the city’s trees, greenspace, and waterways.
9. Reduce food waste across the city.
10. Strengthen the local sustainable food system.

Public Utility Board with James Wilt presenting

Today James Wilt, CAT's policy manager, presented to the Public Utility Board. He shared research by energy modelling specialist Alexander Hogeveen Rutter, which shows that wind and batteries can meet Manitoba’s power needs at a lower cost than gas.

The modelling found that:

1) Building wind power throughout the province (not just in concentrated pockets) leads to far higher winter firm reliability than Manitoba Hydro assumes.
2) Combining wind power with battery energy storage protects against worst-case winter peaks more reliably than fossil gas.
3) Plans prioritizing wind/solar generation and BESS are substantially cheaper than a new gas plant, even before tax credits and higher gas turbine costs.

🌳 Save The Shade🌳
34° vs. 44°. That’s the real difference trees make.

On July 12th at 2 PM, we measured street temperatures two blocks apart on Edmonton St. in Winnipeg — one tree-lined, one without. The tree-lined street measured 34°, while the non-tree’d street hit 44°. That’s a 10-degree difference from shade alone!

This October 28th, we have the chance to vote to protect and grow the tree canopy that keeps our streets, sidewalks, and neighbourhoods livable through Winnipeg summers. 🌳 Save the Shade — Get Involved and Vote for Trees on October 28th

Did you know? 77% of Winnipeggers are worried about climate change. Our city's tree canopy plays a huge role in keeping Winnipeg cooler, cleaner, and more livable — and this October 28th, we have the chance to vote to protect it.

We want every candidate in the civic election to sign the Trees Please Pledge committing them to better protect our mature trees on all land across the city.

This is the first in our weekly "Save the Shade" infographic series from TreesPlease Winnipeg. Check back every Monday for a new one, and help us spread the word by sharing this with your friends and family!
