This year, filmmaker Sidney Phommarath completed post-production of her 22-minute documentary: "Dear Nya," in which Sidney travels to Laos in hopes of bridging the cultural gap between her family members who were affected by the 1970s refugee crisis in Southeast Asia.

"With stories told by myself, my father and my grandmother, I want to close the generational gap in culture that affects those who faced war trauma and forced assimilation," says Sidney. "I want to connect the dots of my family history and preserve them all in one place, one documentary."

Cette année, la réalisatrice Sidney Phommarath a achevé la post-production de son documentaire de 22 minutes intitulé « Dear Nya », dans lequel elle se rend au Laos dans l'espoir de faire le pont entre les différentes cultures des membres de sa famille qui ont été touchés par la crise des réfugiés des années 1970 en Asie du Sud-Est.

« À travers les récits que je partage moi-même, ainsi que ceux de mon père et de ma grand-mère, je souhaite combler le fossé culturel entre les générations qui affecte ceux qui ont subi les traumatismes de la guerre et une assimilation forcée », explique Sidney. « Je souhaite relier les différents éléments de l'histoire de ma famille et les préserver tous en un seul et même lieu, dans un seul documentaire. »

The final Riding Mountain Artist-in-Residence for 2026 is writer Sharon Hamilton! 🏞️

During her stay in the Deep Bay Cabin, she will start drafting her next book, focused on Child and Family Services during the post-World War II baby boom.

"While I have been 'writing' this work in my mind, and in notes and scribbles and collections of research, I need huge amounts of undisturbed discretionary time to set the train of thought in motion," says Sharon. "I'm certain that Wasagaming will be a charming place to stroll through and investigate."

La dernière artiste résidente du Parc national du Mont-Riding pour 2026 est l'écrivaine Sharon Hamilton! 🏞️

Durant son séjour à la cabane de Deep Bay, elle commencera la rédaction de son prochain roman qui portera sur les Services à l'enfant et à la famille durant la forte natalité qui a suivi la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

« Même si j'ai commencé à « écrire » cet ouvrage dans mon esprit et dans des notes, gribouillis et accumulations de recherche, il me faut une bonne dose de temps libre, sans être dérangée, pour mettre le processus créatif en branle », a dit Sharon. « Et je suis certaine que même si Wasagaming a changé depuis, il en demeure un lieu charmant où se balader et explorer. »

This year, animator and filmmaker Connor Yarish completed production of his stop motion short film "Sapling." Funded in part by a Create grant, the film is about a young boy whose dream of being a tree leads him to "plant" himself in the woods, where his imagination unfolds a fantastical vision of a wooden existence.

"On a personal level, the theme of realistic versus unrealistic ambition mirrors my own journey with animation," says Connor. "Aside from its entertainment value, I hope the film invites viewers to reflect on their own ambitions and pursuits, past and present."

Cette année, l'animateur et cinéaste Connor Yarish a achevé la production de son court-métrage en stop motion intitulé « Sapling ». Financé en partie par une subvention de Création, le film raconte l'histoire d'un jeune garçon dont le rêve de devenir un arbre le conduit à se « planter » dans les bois, où son imagination donne vie à une vision fantastique d'une existence arboricole.

« Sur le plan personnel, le thème de l'ambition réaliste par opposition à l'ambition irréaliste fait écho à mon propre parcours dans le monde de l'animation », explique Connor. « Au-delà de son aspect divertissant, j'espère que ce film invitera les spectateurs à réfléchir à leurs propres ambitions et aspirations, passées et présentes. »

In June, the Winnipeg Underground Film Festival celebrated its 13th annual festival. Across 5 days of programming at the Dave Barber Cinematheque and Centre for Cultural & Artistic Practices (C'cap) and funded by a Present grant, the 2026 festival featured curated short film programs, a sold-out 90 Second Film Program, a presentation of Dani and Sheilah ReStack's "Feral Domestic" trilogy, and "Re: Vision: A History of Experimental 3D," curated by Blake Williams.

The ReStack screening was accompanied by an exhibition at C'cap, "Line as Real as Broken," offering audiences additional opportunities to engage with the feature artists' interdisciplinary practice across both film and gallery contexts.

"Organized by a small and devoted team, WUFF continues to bring artists and audiences together through a festival shaped by experimentation, exchange, and the conversations that emerge around the work," said Madeline Bogoch, co-director of WUFF.

En juin, le Winnipeg Underground Film Festival a célébré sa 13e édition. Financé par une subvention Présentation et s'étalant sur cinq jours de programmation à la Cinémathèque Dave Barber et au Centre for Cultural & Artistic Practices (C'cap), le festival 2026 a proposé des sélections de courts-métrages, un programme « 90 Second Film » à guichets fermés, une présentation de la trilogie « Feral Domestic » de Dani et Sheilah ReStack, ainsi que « Re: Vision : A History of Experimental 3D », organisée par Blake Williams.

La projection de l'œuvre de ReStack était accompagnée d'une exposition au C'cap, intitulée « Line as Real as Broken », offrant au public des occasions supplémentaires de découvrir la pratique interdisciplinaire des artistes mises à l'honneur, tant dans le contexte cinématographique que dans celui de la galerie.

« Organisé par une petite équipe dévouée, le WUFF continue de rassembler artistes et public à travers un festival placé sous le signe de l'expérimentation, des échanges et des conversations qui émergent autour des œuvres », a déclaré Madeline Bogoch, codirectrice du WUFF.

The next Riding Mountain Artist-in-Residence for 2026 is photo-based artist Daisy Wu! 🏞️

During her stay in the Deep Bay Cabin, she will continue work on a project that speaks to the experiences of Chinese immigrants, combining screen prints, sculptures, photographs, and found materials.

"Last time I went to the park, I noticed a group of tourists from China. Hearing the conversation of tourists from China has produced a strong sense of recognition and connection," says Daisy. "I want to experience that connection again and experiment with how the presence of Chinese tourists and immigrants might inform my art making process."

La prochaine artiste résidente du Parc national du Mont-Riding pour 2026 est l'artiste photographe Daisy Wu! 🏞️

Durant son séjour à la cabane de Deep Bay, elle poursuivra son travail sur un projet traitant de l'expérience des immigrants chinois qui combine des sérigraphies, des sculptures, des photographies et des objets trouvés.

« Ma dernière visite du parc a incité une réflexion plus profonde sur l'immigration et le tourisme, » a dit Daisy. « Lors de cette visite, j'ai remarqué un groupe de touristes venus de Chine. Entendre leurs conversations a évoqué en moi un sentiment fort de reconnaissance et de connexion. Je veux ressentir cette connexion de nouveau et découvrir comment la présence de touristes chinois peut éclairer mon processus créatif. »

In February, Manitoba Cultural Society of the Deaf presented "Rebirth of Courage," an autobiographical play by Deaf Olympian sprinter and actor Natasha Bacchus.

Funded by an Artists in Communities grant, the performance was hosted at the West End Cultural Centre. As well, Natasha facilitated a free drama workshop with students of the Manitoba School for the Deaf, sharing her experience in performing arts with local Deaf youth.

"This was an immensely successful project that brought together members of Manitoba's Deaf and hearing communities to celebrate and learn about Deaf arts," says Cheryle Broszeit, president of MCSD-DAM. "Many Deaf community members came to the event and were eager to engage with Courage following the performance, including young Deaf performers who will benefit from her mentorship in the future."

En février, la Manitoba Cultural Society of the Deaf – Deaf Arts Manitoba a présenté « Rebirth of Courage », une pièce autobiographique écrite par Natasha Bacchus, sprinteuse olympique sourde et comédienne.

Financée par une subvention du programme « Artists in Communities », la représentation a eu lieu au West End Cultural Centre. De plus, Natasha a animé un atelier de théâtre gratuit avec les élèves de la Manitoba School for the Deaf, partageant ainsi son expérience des arts du spectacle avec les jeunes sourds de la région.

« Ce projet a remporté un immense succès : il a permis de rassembler des membres des communautés sourdes et entendantes du Manitoba pour célébrer et découvrir les arts des personnes sourdes », explique Cheryle Broszeit, présidente de la MCSD-DAM. « De nombreux membres de la communauté sourde sont venus à l'événement et étaient impatients d'échanger avec Natasha Bacchus après la représentation, notamment de jeunes artistes sourds qui bénéficieront de son mentorat à l'avenir. »

Les subventions « Artistes dans les collectivités » soutiennent les artistes, les groupes artistiques et les organismes qui rencontrent des obstacles pour accéder à des opportunités artistiques ou qui servent une communauté qui fait face à des obstacles. In July, interdisciplinary artist Francys Catherine Ruiz Moreno returned to her home country of Colombia to study traditional ceramic practices in the town of Ráquira.

Funded by a Travel/Professional Development grant, Francys worked with artisans at the Taller de Cerámica Nápoles, participating in the full process – from collecting clay to shaping, firing, and finishing works.

"The highlight of the project was the opportunity to witness pottery as a living tradition rather than simply a craft," said Francys. "I initially focused on developing my technical skills, but I left with a deeper interest in exploring themes of cultural memory, colonization, and the disappearance of traditional knowledge through my artistic practice."

« Le point fort de ce projet a été de pouvoir découvrir la poterie comme une tradition vivante plutôt que comme un simple artisanat », expliqué Francys. « Au départ, je me suis concentrée sur le développement de mes compétences techniques, mais je suis repartie avec un intérêt plus profond pour l'exploration, à travers ma pratique artistique, de thèmes tels que la mémoire culturelle, la colonisation et la disparition des savoirs traditionnels. »
