SIXTIES SCOOP CRAFT & CHAT

The Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba is working with the Anish Corporation to host welcoming spaces for people impacted by the Sixties Scoop, with events continuing throughout the year.

You are invited to take part in an afternoon of creativity, connection, and conversation. Enjoy beading or bring along another craft project of your choice.

Come spend time in a welcoming and supportive space with others in the community.

When: September 10 & 24; October 8 & 22; November 12 & 26; and December 10

SCO CELEBRATES KEVIN CHIEF’S NEW BOOK: “WITH A NAME LIKE CHIEF”

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is celebrating SCO citizen and advisor, Kevin Chief, on the release of his new book.

It was published today and is called, “With a Name Like Chief: Reflections on Recovery and Identity Through the Seven Sacred Teachings.”

A proud member of Minegoziibe Anishinabe, Kevin is a former Manitoba Cabinet minister, a bridge builder, a gifted speaker, a proud family man, and a high-stepping square dancer.

Now, Mr. Chief is sharing his powerful and important life story. His book explores the themes of identity, reconciliation, and recovery from alcoholism.

He shared, “I hold deeply that nurturing connections, exploring identity, and sharing stories all matter a great deal.

This belief is at the heart of my decision to write this book.”

Follow his journey—from growing up in poverty, to becoming a star athlete, to serving as an elected official—in this inspiring book.

Co-authored by Stu Slayen, “With a Name Like Chief” is available now to order from HighWater Press (an imprint of Portage & Main Press).

SIGN A PETITION BY 11 AM ON SEPT. 2 TO SUPPORT SURVIVORS

Last chance to sign a petition to support Survivors!

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is encouraging all Canadians to sign a petition calling on the federal government to:

✦ Provide long-term, stable funding to support the search for missing children and unmarked graves
✦ Continue funding for Survivor healing, cultural supports, and community-led wellness services
✦ Follow through on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
✦ Ensure this work is led by Indigenous people and centred on Survivors

Member of Parliament Leah Gazan sponsored this petition (e-7410)—it is open and accepting signatures.

Important programs that support our citizens—including mental wellness, cultural healing, and work related to missing children—are being reduced or may end, even though this work is not finished.

Now is the time to act.

SCO encourages leadership, Survivors, families, youth, and community members to sign and share this petition.

PERFECTLY IMPERFECT

Summer is nearing its’ end… but we still have some wonderful artisans who grace the pow wow trail we would like you to meet.

Today, we want to introduce you to Pamela Roulette of the O-Chi-Chak-Ko-Sipi First Nation and her husband Dennis Roulette from the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.

Together, they have formed Pam’s Imperfections.

Pam is a self-taught seamstress, specializing in ribbon skirts and star blankets.

The Roulettes try to get to around five pow wows per year.

Lucky for us, they chose the Sandy Bay gathering this summer when our cameras were there.

When asked about the business name, Pam says “nothing and nobody is perfect, right?”

While that may be true, we thought this was the “perfect” opportunity to feature this entrepreneurial couple.

SCO LAUNCHES SIXTH ANNUAL EVERY CHILD MATTERS CAMPAIGN: LEARN, REMEMBER, AND ACT

The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is launching its sixth annual Every Child Matters campaign, continuing our work to educate Manitobans on the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and to honour Survivors, their families, and the children who never returned home.

Throughout September, SCO will provide giveaways; information about events; public education and awareness information on billboard, bus ads, social media, and our website, and opportunities to learn and act.

The campaign leads into Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.

“September 30 carries the weight of generations of hurt, but it also reflects the strength and resilience of our Nations,” said Grand Chief Jerry Daniels.

“We have a responsibility to face the truth and make sure the experiences of our people are not forgotten. Every Child Matters is a call to keep learning, keep speaking the truth, and keep working for better outcomes for our children and families.”

SCO CONGRATULATES CHIEF AND COUNCIL OF BLOODVEIN RIVER FIRST NATION

On behalf of the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO), Grand Chief Jerry Daniels congratulates Chief Lisa Young on her re-election as Chief of Bloodvein River First Nation along with re-elected Councillors Karen Cook, Kelvin A. Raven, and Cindy Young. SCO also congratulates newly-elected council member and community champion Corey Bighorn.

There have been so many positive developments in Bloodvein River in the past two years, and SCO looks forward to continuing to work alongside Chief and Council as they advocate for and represent the citizens of the Nation.

SCO wishes you continued success as you serve your beautiful Nation.

"25 YEARS ON. STILL NEEDED."

That’s this year’s theme for the International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD).

Every August 31st for the past 25 years, IOAD brings together people to remember those we’ve lost and to take action to save lives from problematic substance use and overdoses.

As part of our ongoing commitment to keeping our loved ones safe, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO), in partnership with the City of Brandon and Health Canada, delivers a mobile harm reduction outreach service to support all community members who need it most.

SCO’s Harm Reduction Team provides harm reduction supplies such as fentanyl test strips, nasal Narcan, safer inhalation kits, clean needles, and safer s*x supplies at no cost.

The team also delivers education that can help the stigma associated with problematic substance use, healthy s*xuality, and raise awareness around the importance of using a harm reduction approach.

On this 25th anniversary of IOAD, SCO sends our condolences to the families and friends of all those who have lost loves ones to an overdose. We also commit to doing more to identify long-term solutions to help end this crisis in our Nations and urban centres.

Hundreds of dancers. More than 20 registered drums. Countless moments of pure joy!

The Birdtail Sioux Dakota Nation marked its’ first wacipi (pow wow) in 15 years in absolute style.

Pow wow dancer Lacy Bird, Youth Chief for the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO), joined leadership from several of our member Nations.

Birdtail Chief Tréchelle Bunn warmly welcomed dancers and leadership back to the circle.

SCO congratulates Chief Bunn, Council, the pow wow committee, and everyone who helped make the highly-anticipated return of the wacipi, such a resounding success.
