Representing 34 southern First Nation communities in Manitoba. Protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nations peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

JOIN US | WINNIPEG MAYORAL CANDIDATES FORUM

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC), Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO), Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO), and Treaty One Development Corporation (T1DC) invite First Nations leadership, members, and the public to save the date for the upcoming Winnipeg Mayoral Candidates Forum, focused on urban First Nations issues and priorities.

Will also be live-streamed.

This forum will provide an important opportunity for Winnipeg mayoral candidates to engage directly with First Nations leadership and members, hear the priorities and concerns of First Nations Peoples in Winnipeg, and speak to how they intend to address matters within the City of Winnipeg’s areas of responsibility.

Discussions will focus on priorities affecting First Nations Peoples, including housing and homelessness, community safety and justice, health and mental wellness, economic development, employment and education, First Nations representation in municipal decision-making, and stronger relationships between the City of Winnipeg and First Nations leadership.

First Nations voices must be heard in decisions that shape the future of Winnipeg. This forum creates space for First Nations leadership and members to raise questions directly with mayoral candidates and ensure our priorities, experiences, and perspectives are part of the conversation.

ONE OF OUR OWN

We would now like to shine the spotlight on a quick-thinking member of the Communications Team at the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO).

In recent weeks, Joshua Lakatos—Communications Officer and a citizen of Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation—was driving to his home in Winnipeg, when he noticed a man in distress outside of a gym.

The man who was looking unwell as he lay face up on the sidewalk, while a woman was trying to tend to him.

Instead of just driving by, Joshua made the courageous decision to stop and assist.

He called 9-1-1 and then ran inside the gym to find someone who could administer Narcan or Naloxone to the man.

Josh then stayed with the man until first responders arrived.

They were able to resuscitate the individual and transport him to the hospital.

When asked why he made the decision to stop and help, Joshua says he does not want to be a person who drives or walks by one of our relations who may be in distress.

SCO believes strongly in keeping our loved ones safe and offer change through minimizing harms.

We are constantly working to respond effectively to addressing the harmful colonial practices that have contributed to high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder, intergenerational trauma, including increased rates of substance use and a decline in mental wellness in our communities.

This includes the creation of our Mobile Harm Reduction Services in the city of Brandon.

Submitting reimbursement claims through a Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) web account is convenient, secure, and helps you avoid mail delays!

You can submit claims online for pharmacy, dental, medical supplies and equipment, vision care, and mental health counselling benefits.

To use your account or to create one, visit: https://nihb-ssna.express-scripts.ca/en

Once you have created and logged into your account:
- Select the “Submit Claims” option from the sidebar menu.
- Have your supporting documents, such as prescriptions and receipts, ready to upload.
- If another benefit plan covered part of your claim, include the Explanation of Benefits from that plan.
- Click “Submit” one time only—wait for confirmation.

TRUE TRAIL BLAZER

The Swan Lake First Nation recently played host to a huge cross-country meet for the Prairie Spirit School Division.

It’s the second year in a row the Nation has welcomed hundreds of visitors, and its thanks in large part to one citizen.

Errol Cameron is entering his 17th year at the helm of the maintenance department at the Indian Springs School.

He used to be a competitive runner and knew his Nation’s lands were an ideal location for high-end cross-country meets.

Fourteen years ago, he started work on a trail system—it is now more than five kilometres long!

Errol performs all the maintenance of the trail system by himself, and that determination is paying off in a big way.

Visiting coaches and athletes describe Errol’s network of trails as “Cadillac!”

As part of our ongoing "Movement is Medicine" healthy living campaign, the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) is pleased to highlight role models who do what they can to develop wellness infrastructure.

The Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO) is hiring a Payroll Administrator.

This role is responsible for the accurate and timely administration of payroll and employee benefits while providing accounting and financial reporting support to the Finance Department.

The Payroll Administrator maintains payroll records, processes payroll transactions, ensures compliance with applicable legislation and benefit plans, prepares payroll-related reconciliations and analyses, and assists with financial reporting and audit requirements.

SCO ROCK THE VOTE!

The Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO) is encouraging Manitoba citizens to vote in the upcoming municipal elections later this month.

This includes elections for mayors, reeves, councillors, and school board trustees.

For most municipalities, election day is Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

To be eligible to vote, you must:

• Be a Canadian citizen
• Be at least 18 years old on election day
• A resident of the local authority or Local Urban District OR a registered owner of land in the municipality or Local Urban District for at least six months on election day
