🎉 Welcome to 2019 with the Ethiopian & Eritrean community! 🎉

Did you know 🤔 on September 11, Ethiopians and Eritreans celebrate the New Year according to the Ethiopian calendar. The celebration is known as Enkutatash in Amharic and Awde Amet in Tigrinya.

The Ethiopian calendar, known as the Ge'ez calendar follows a unique 13-month system. It is approximately 7–8 years behind the Gregorian calendar, and Meskerem 1, 2019 begins on September 11, 2026. 🗓️

The West End is home to a vibrant Ethiopian and Eritrean community, with local restaurants, grocers, salons, and other businesses that reflect the cultures and traditions of the community.

Mural Monday 🎨✨

This week’s feature: “Pathways” by Michel Saint Hilaire and Mandy van Leeuwen

The mural was painted for Home Playground Wading Pool. Mandy and Michel thought it would be a great idea to depict a young girl dreaming of her future. The mural shows the young girl looking at all the potential in her life; where she can go and what is out there for her. The mural shows cities and places in her imagination (New York, Spain, and Asia).

The houses on the left side are real West End houses, almost the exact strip along Maryland between Sargent and Wellington.

The playground also had a recent renovation. New benches, tables, and grass were added. The cracks at the bottom of the pool were also filled up, beautifying the park and our neighbourhood.

Mural Mondays 🖌️✨

This weeks feature: ENERGIZE Mural Project

Back in 2023, West End BIZ indtroduced Saturdays on Sargent to elevate and promote Sargent Avenue (from Balmoral Street to Banning Street).

ENERGIZE Mural Project was live mural paintings during the event that would add three new murals to along Sargent Avenue.

The project:
- three live mural paintings
- three buildings along Sargent
- three amazing mural artists

With the support from Councillor Cindy Gilroy, the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba, RBC Royal Bank, as well as West End BIZ members along Sargent Avenue, the project was a success!

Buwan ng Wika (Language Month) is celebrated in the Philippines during the month of August
