The Winnipeg Beach Fire Department extends our deepest condolences following the tragic motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 8 and Highway 229 on the evening of September 6.
Although this incident occurred near Winnipeg Beach, the intersection is within the response area of our neighbouring fire department. Gimli Fire & Rescue responded to the scene, with Emergency Medical Responders from the Matlock Fire Department also attending.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and communities of the four young people who tragically lost their lives. We are also thinking of those who were injured and everyone affected by this devastating incident.
We also extend our support to the firefighters, emergency medical responders, paramedics, RCMP officers, dispatchers, and other emergency personnel who responded. Incidents of this nature have a lasting impact on everyone involved, including those who answer the call.
This intersection has been the scene of numerous motor vehicle collisions over the years and has been a longstanding safety concern in our area. While the circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation, we would welcome a review of the intersection and any appropriate changes that could help reduce the frequency and severity of future incidents.

On Sept. 6, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Gimli RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision near Winnipeg Beach.
The collision occurred when a vehicle travelling west on Highway 229 was struck while crossing Highway 8 by a southbound van. The intersection has stop signs for westbound and eastbound traffic. Both vehicles went into the southwest ditch, with one vehicle rolling and landing on its roof.
Four people inside the westbound vehicle were gravely injured and died at the scene. They include:
• An 18-year-old female from Winnipeg, who was the driver;
• An 18-year-old male from Gimli;
• An 18-year-old female from Sandy Hook; and
• A 17-year-old male from Ear Falls, Ont.
Four people from Winnipeg were inside the van, driven by a 49-year-old male, and suffered minor injuries in the collision. The four – which also included an adult female and two children – were taken by ambulances to Winnipeg for treatment.
A traffic reconstructionist from RCMP Traffic Services was called to the scene to assist in the ongoing investigation.
